    My Dish Network Experience

My rant, sorry in advance for the length.

I went with Dish back in Oklahoma about year ago, price was better plus free DVR. Moved and two months later got a critical error on the screen telling me the hard drives were bad (reciever #1)

Called their "lack of" customer service department, go through all the prompts and all the troubleshooting BS like powercycling the reciever and finally get a live person. I explained the issue and again was asked to powercycle the reciever this time with the suggestion of unplugging it from the wall and going through a few of the menu options. Do this and told them what the screen said and the response was "hmm, think you got a hard drive problem" (you think). They blind transfer me to their "advanced techincal support." Here I explain the issue all over again and run through the same troubleshooting BS that I did with the other representative, except the powercycling part. I am told at this point the hard drives are bad and they'll send me another reciever.

2 weeks go by and nothing, call customer service again and I am told it was sent two weeks ago, but because of the Colorado weather it was probably delayed. I give it another week, after getting a package my dad sent from Texas which got to me in 3 days I call Dish back.
There I am told they'll have to track it down before sending me another and to give them 3 more days to locate it. Call back again, (everytime you call you got to go through the stupid prompts). I am told they have not found it yet call back again later. (getting pee'od at this point)
Call back again and was told the same thing, "give a supervisor now." The supervisor takes a look at the account and says, "it was never sent, appears there was problem with the order."

(Reciever #2) Gets to me in three days after talking to the supervisor.
Hook it up, go through the supplied instructions and this one won't record on either of the hard drives both enabled too. It also wouldn't show any program names on the guide.
Call them back, go through all the silliness again only to find out the hard drives were bad on this one too. They are sending another.

(Reciever #3) Arrives three days later, hook it up and now I can record on hard drive 1 (only manually, can't set a time for it to record) and the second hard drive won't do either. (checked and it is enable to record too) However, I can see the programs on the guide now.

Call the igits back! (I say igits, there's a couple of words for them I'd like to use but won't on here)

Get someone on the phone finally and explain the issue, go through all the BS again, including powercycling the stupid thing again. This igit tells me, they will have to submit a request to their engineers to flash the reciever remotely for a different software load and this may or may not fix the problem in 3 to 5 business days, if not they'll send another.

She tells me that it's strange that I am having the same hard drive problems and they cannot send another until they go this route first. I asked her what causes this, the response I got back was it sitting upside down for a long period and being dropped. Knowing that UPS doesn't handle things gently I asked if the shipping process could cause this. She replied yes it could. So I make a suggestion, for them to send someone out with another, she said they could do that but I'll be charged!

Pi$$ed at this point, I ask for a supervisor and explained why, the rep waived the charge after talking to a supervisor and said that a tech would be at my house between 12 and 5 with a new reciever yesterday.

Door bell rings at 12:30, Dish tech standing there reciever-less. He tells me his work order says to come out and check the customer's equipment not to replace it and suggests that I call Dish after he leaves and yell at them. Much to his surprise I call them while he plays around with the reciever, trying to get it to work (he can't either).
On the phone with another rep and he tells me to ask the tech if he can go back to the dispatch center and get one, the tech replies no, it's closed for the weekend. (a bunch of BS if you ask me)
The phone rep tells me he is sending another and it should get here by Wednesday, but they had specific notes on the order to replace it.
On the way out my front door, the dispatched igit tells me he pretty much ignored the order and just figured he needed to come out and reset the reciever.

Now I am waiting for #4...

In short, stay the h$%& away from Dish.

I have had good luck with replacing a old receiver from Dish. But now I am wondering if I should get the free upgrade for my receivers. I wanted to get a DVR receiver but will think twice about fixing something that not broke. I have always had good luck with Dish but these call center leave al ot to be desired. Think I will hold off until we get the new Big Screen HD TV next fall.

If you would just substitute the words "Time-Warner" for Dish you would have my experience with tech support except my issues alternate between the TV equipment & cable modem.

I feel your pain. When I went through a cable modem problem very similar to yours, the technician showed up withOUT the replacement parts--even after I went through their telephone support 3 times and specifically requested they advise the technician to bring a replacement. He told me the company would not allow them to keep that equipment on the truck because of inventory shrinkage.

You could understand, if the technician was on the road and on call. But not when they are scheduled 3-4 days out. Ninty-nine percent of the problems always originate on Friday.

He went back to shop to pick up another box (45 minutes), came back to my house (another 45 minutes). It was also defective. He went back again (45 minutes), tested the equipment at the shop (20 minutes), came back (another 45 minutes) and replaced it. I guess that also explains why he didn't show up for his next appointment with the guy who took off a day from work to have his equipment fixed.

It's very difficult to remain civil, but that's just the level of customer support that is typical today! And I was considering going from cable to Dish.

We had Dish for a while. Didn't like it, so we went with DirecTV. Nothing but good customer service from them. It's been maybe 4 years since the switch, and we haven't regretted it.

I had Dish TV installed for my in-laws at an apartment complext. The tech took a couple of hours to get everything installed, most arguing why he couldn't stick it in a bucket and on the phone figuring out stuff. While he was there, a Direct TV truck showed up at a neighbors, installed, and was long gone before the Dish TV guy ever had anything working.

I haven't had much need to contact the tech support people, but i've had bad experiences with their account people.

My Dad had dish for a while because their broadband access was cheaper than DirecTV. After the broadband satellite died and he had to get DSL he got tired of Dish's customer service and switched to DirecTV like I have. He pays a slight premium but everything works and he gets better customer service.

That's funny you mention that. When we moved we had to call them out to install another dish on the new house.

The guy that showed up really got on my nerves. The new house already had a drop for the dish in the attic, but the guy insisted on running his own cable on the outside of the house and making a new hole in the side to get to the basement and into the panel.

We got concrete shingles on this house too and this is where he pushed me over the limit. He insisted on walking accross the roof on one side of the house to get to where he wanted to install the dish.
I told him that they do not suggest you walking on it and it voids the 50 year warranty should they break with him walking on it, I told him he needed to go on the other side and install using a ladder.

He wanted to sit on the roof and install it instead of standing on the ladder and it was a shorter distance for him to carry the ladder on one side than carrying it over to the side he wanted to install the dish.
I told him, NO! Went into the house for a sec. Came out and the moron was doing it anyway, caught him one rung from the top. Told him to get down and he argued with me that he was doing it this way or it wasn't getting done at all.

Called Dish right then and there while he stood there, his attitude changed pretty quick and he did it the way I asked before someone got on the line.

Yes, as soon as the contract is up I am going with Direct TV, had them before and they were great, should have known better.

I too played the dish network game and switched back to directv. I had directv but they tried to charge me twice for one bill so I switched to dish. Since switching back to directv I have had good service. My brother has dish and he pays a monthly fee to have his system under a warranty and he has had a ton of problems and they will send out a tech but it takes a long time for them to get there.

well, just to give a different opinion of Dish, we had Directv for 8 years or so (on e of their first customers) and switched to Dish just over three years ago in order to get a DVR (especially since it was free). It worked perfectly until about three months ago, when the hard drive finally started to act up. Customer service was ok during that time, I rarely had to call them. Once it became clear that our unit was giving up the ghost, I ordered a new system from Directv (again, free). So far so good with the new unit, but I liked the Dish unit better, it was easier to navigate. YMMV

It is a bummer that DirecTV is making their own DVRs now. I'm glad I got one of the DirecTiVos. I love this thing and it is almost as nice as my stand alone Series 2 TiVo. I had been debating saving just a little money and going with Dish, but I keep reading horror stories like this.
