We are thinking of getting Vonage. I got a Vonage VTA for free that includes 4 ethernet ports. I have a router with wireless and require the wireless - the VTA does not have this. Does the vonage WAN connection need to be connected to my DSL modem directly or will it work connected to my router? I did a quick check online and the non-router VTA shows Vonage connected to the broadband connection and a router connected to the Vonage.

I use Sunrocket not Vonage but I have tested their adapter both before my router and connected to 1 of the wired ports of my wireless router. My phone system worked fine in either configuration. I'm sure you could use your router either before or after the Vonage router. -
Actually it takes bits and bytes. Plus it is wireless - gets its power via microwave.
Thanks Max. Technically it seemed it should be possible I just needed to know what ports to open on my firewall. I rummaged on Vonage's site and found the info - I wasn't sure whether they supported it.David

The Vonage instructions show internet>ATA>router, but 95% of the people in whatever VOIP fourm you check do internet>router>ATA.
Especially helpful if your router has the ability to do "quality of service" and give the ATA priority.Comment

I have Vonage and my vonage adapter is behind my (Linksys) router. Works just fine. I just plugged it in and it worked. Of course, different model (only 1 network port) but I doubt that makes much difference.

Thanks fellas. I didn't think it would matter but the Vonage rep thought it would, despite the fact that I found instructions on their site for doing what I wanted to do.
My router is a business class so I do have to open some ports. Not a big deal, I found what ports I need on the vonage site. I stop all traffic except that coming from specific internal hosts -I set things up with DHCP using persistent reservations.David
