I can sympathize with the owner. Probably found a good deal on wood and didn't have a pickup truck.
About four months ago, I bought a hundred board feet of rough walnut from a guy. Instead of taking my wife's *Volvo* station wagon, I put it in the back of my Ford Probe and tied the hatch down.Comment

I must confess packing the rear hatch of a Ford pinto full of wood one time. Major overload, broke one of the rear springs.Comment

Confession Time I guess ... I confess to packing a '92 Pontiac Grand Prix GT's truck and back seat with scrap and off-cut oak & maple that was free at a former job ... did it several times with the rear suspension bottomed out"Experience: that most brutal of teachers. That is a very tough call. I would say they are both insane. At one time I had a Chevy K5 Blazer that I had removed the back seat for more room. We bought boxes and boxes of floor tile, bags of thinset, and boxes of grout, loaded up and drove home. The front wheels were barely touching the road, so I had my wife lean forward up onto the dash, and it helped a little. I asked her if she minded getting tied to the hood, she said "No way!".

Not having a truck, I totally sympathize. However, I have been able to get away with getting a lot into my sedan. I can fit 3 sheets of plywood into the car with all doors and trunk fastened shut. Sure, I have to have Lowes rip them lengthwise in half, but they fit!Comment

haha, that's great. The title of this thread is misleading though- I DO believe it!
I live in MA, and the closest place is "Downes & Reader" about 45-50 minutes from me. I have an '03 Bonneville. The back seat does NOT go down, only the arm rest goes down with an opening for wood. It's amazing that they knew to put that in there for the wood guys. (What do you mean it's for skis?)
I don't buy a lot of wood, and I've only gone a couple times, but I try to buy 8' boards and under, and then slide them into the trunk, through the opening, and onto the center console between the front seats. Then, I criss-cross the smaller boards in the back seat and wedge them in. I am very careful of glass, as I wound up breaking my rear window the christmas of '05 trying to get a large firepit into the trunk (dad's christmas gift). Bungee let go, went straight to the window. I'm an idiot sometimes.
Anyway, one day I'm cramming wood in and the guy who measures comes over to help out. Told me he's seen people leave with pinto's full of stuff that you wouldn't beleive. Since I had a 50 minute ride back, I try to be careful....but I can sympathize.F#$@ no good piece of S#$% piece of #$@#% #@$#% #$@#$ wood! Dang. - Me woodworkingComment

The one I will always remember was at Lowes once a woman was loading wet, muddy, heavy sod into a Honda Civic. She filled the trunk and bottomed out the suspension, then proceeded to stack more sod on the floor in the passenger seat. I looked at the Lowes guy and he said 'yeah I know but she didn't want to pay the 20 bucks for the truck rental.'
And apparently this was her boyfriend's car - hers was in the shop...David
