    Digital Camera Question

    I gave LOML a Canon A530 Powershot for Christmas. It has an SDCard. I have a card reader it slots into but when I plug it into both our PCs it wants to format the card. There are pictures on the card.

    I transferred some images using the Canon SW and the card in the camera but would rather use the card reader - it is simpler and a direct copy is faster. What do I have to do to the card to be able to read it directly? Our Kodak camera I could always just read the card directly.

      I got LOML the same camera, it's great.

      One thing I did was format the card on the camera before first use. It was trecommended in the manual as a way to get faster access time (mine was a 1GB "fast" SD card to begin with). It worked quite well after doing that. I don't know which submenu to go to, but dive in and format it on the camera after you grab off the pics you want.

      Added: I use a reader for my cards just like you want to also. I copy files off using explorer, no camera bundle software.

          Ok, that is probably what I have to do. I vaguely recall something about formatting on the old camera. I'd look it up in the usermanual except we left it at my inlaws.

              If you have pictures on the card then the card is probably already formatted. You didn't mention which operating system you are using. Windows 98, 98se, ME and Windows 2000 may require drivers to be installed - these should be on the CD that (hopefully) came with the card reader. Windows XP doesn't usually require any additional drivers.

              Card readers are very handy but some work better than others.

                  I called Kingston tech support. We tried a few things and suspect it is the card reader. The card works fine in the camera and the camera recognizes the full capacity. XP wants to format the card and only presents it as 1GB.

                      Hmm. Well, if the card can be read from the camera then both the card and the camera seem to be working. My guess would be that something is wrong with the card reader. I know from experience that card readers can corrupt cards and the data on the card.

                      Can you try another card reader? I just bought a card reader at Radio Shack last week ($8 on sale) that doubles as a card reader and a flash drive. It is replacing a card reader that would read a 128MB xD card but not a 512MB xD card.
