    DDR2 Memory Question

    Simple (I think) question:

Is there such a thing as DDR2 memory for computers that use the AMD Athlon/Sempron/etc family of processors?

DDR2 is just faster than DDR SDRAM. I dont think there is a difference between AMD or pentium. just notebook or desktop.....
YOU DONT HAVE TO TRAIN TO BE MISERABLE. YOU HAVE TO TRAIN TO ENDURE MISERY.

It's not quite as simple as one is just faster than the other. The technology is quite a bit different between the two. Now DDR is the same for AMD or intel as is DDR2.

AMD does have newer processors that use DDR2. You can tell by what socket the chip uses. The AMD AM2 socket is DDR for the Althon 64 and Sempron models. Other sockets use DDR, and are older chips.

Here's a page from AMD with some information:

      http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/...,00.html#91034

If you have any more questions, ask. I know DDR very, very well.

As Jim mentioned there are now AMD boards that use DDR2. However the on-processor memory controller used by the AMDs mean that you see a smaller performance increase from the DDR2 than you would on an intel system.

Thanks, everyone. Slightly refined version of the question, then:

Does anyone know of any Socket 754 motherboards that support DDR2?

I looked at the AMD link above, couldn't really find a definitive answer. I do know that New Egg currently shows 49 Socket 754 mobos available, and none of them support DDR2.

I don't think you're are going to find one.

754, and 939 are older chipsets for AMD. They were released before DDR2 came to market. The chipset for AMD that will support DDR2 is AM2.

I'd still go intel core 2 duo though.

That's exactly what I thought; thank you.

BTW I'm not shopping. Some of you may remember a previous thread in which I was gathering intelligence, so to speak, to discredit a "consultant" that I have reason to have doubts about. This is more of that.

                Thanks again, to everyone.

                  Larry,

Defiantely not going to find one. The memory controller on the AMD processors in on the same chip as the processor (Intel puts it on a different chip). So, a new socket is needed for DDR2.

the only amd socket that has ddr2 memory support is the AM2.
