    Fine Woodworking Forum (Paid)

I know there was quite a bit of conversation about a paid forum (subcribers) $14.00, (non-lsubscribers), #35.00. A bit pricy for info you can mainly get from back issues.

Being a life-long subscriber to FWW, and really stupid about spending money, I took a chance. Paid my $14.00 and hoped for the best.

After 4 or so months as a member, I can't believe just how much time I've saved downloading PDFs of articles (yeah I know, I already have them) when I need to solve a problem that crops up at the worst time.

No longer do I have to find each year's issue and befoe you know it, It's dark and too cold to continue.

For my part, I truly feel it was the best $14.00 I ever spent on something having to do with woodworking.

And besides, it doesn't take up room, and is easy to hide from the wife.

Yep, gotta agree. The fellowship on the forums is not anywhere like what is here but what is?

Bruce, I'd sooner print a PDF and keep it in the shop. It doesn't matter what you spill on it, etc..

People have referred me to those PDF archives a number of times. I don't have a print or electronic subscription, but have often thought of getting at least the electronic one. I can only imagine the value of those articles. How far do they go back? And how quickly do they add articles from newer issues?

I'm fairly sure that the entire life of the publication has been converted and is deardchable. New material is added as soon as soon as a new issue gets released.

Besides, they have mini-tutorials and film clips on the stie too.

I totally agree, love the site and all that it offers. I paid $35.00 and think it's one of the best investments I have made.

Bruce, thanks for the, uhhh, review? testimonial?

At first I kind of bristled at how they started charging for accessing their website. Then, I pretty much forgot all about it. Now, you've made me curious.

One of the things I'm wondering: does the online membership contain all of the content of the printed version, or only the main articles?

              Thanks,
              Tom

I"m wondering the same thing. It's hard to believe they would put everything from previous issues online for downloading. Why would anyone want to subscribe to a hard copy for a year or two?

Tom Miller: From what I have seen it contains everything in the printed version accept for the ads.

I love the online version of FWW.

I hate the forums though, the software they are using is horrible.

Yes, it allows you to read all the articles in each mag and even the specials like Tools & Shops. I just got back from Lowes and looked at the hard copy of Tools & Shops and all the articles are supplied in the soft verison on the site.

I gave up the print subscription in favor of the electronic version. Have found it more useful, plus I get copies that I can reference and print out when I want.

OK, I'm in! See you guys in a couple weeks -- I've got a lot of reading to do!

The FWW online subscription is great! I can not even tell you how much I use it. It can be so helpful when trying to figure out how to do something and then you do a search there and come up with every article FWW has on it. Also nice that a lot of the skills and techniques have little videos associated with them.

Also it is kind of cool to log on to the main FWW page, scroll down to the bottom and see one of my pieces as being “Featured in the Gallery”.

Yes Ken, I've been meaning to congratulate you for that fine bit of workmanship. Well done! Does that make you biased in your praise of FWW?

Is it a paper or online thing for most people? Or do you still want both?

Yup,you guys are right, its just about the entire issue.

And you're all correct, the forum (knots) sucks.
