    Apocalypto

Anybody going to see the new Gibson movie? My 7th-grader, who is learning about ancient civilizations in Social Studies, expressed interest.

Morning Edition reviewed it today. I thought it was very interesting, as I find it more of a critique of Gibson's philosophical intention behind the movie than a review of the movie itself. Here's a link:

I saw the preview for it when we went to see Casino Royale.. Looked like a pretty intense and gorry movie, asked my LOML if we could go see it and she said nope so I guess I'll be waiting until it comes out on DVD.

One of my favorite movies were The Last of the Mohicans and Farewell to the King.

Read review carefully--VERY gory, maybe more so than his last film.

This guy really has a fetish about violence and torture (cf. virtually all of the movieds he's directed). Having said that, I want to see it because I'm fascinated by the middle American cultures--Mayan, Aztec, etc., I'm not a prude when it comes to on-screen violence and gore, and I hear it is actually a pretty good movie.

I wouldn't take MY 6th grader to see it--not sure if this is the best way to teach history, but older kids maybe could handle it.

Apparently many Guatemalans aren't too happy about the film.

I just talked to my son about this as I was also concerned. His response: "We got through the naked wrestling scene in BORAT; we can get through anything."

Definitely on my "to see" list if I get a chance over the holidays.

It's performed in a Mayan dialect. Realistic I guess, but I'll pass. Mel loves his blood and gore a little too much for my taste. Venting his homicidal feelings perhaps?
