    "mica"...is it just me??

I've read several posts from our friend Cabinetman here where he describes using "mica" in various applications. For the longest time, I thought he was referring to the mineral sometimes used in lampshades (esp. mission style) or for windows on old woodstoves. I couldn't fathom how he could be using it in the ways he described.

It finally dawned on me that he is talking about plastic laminate: Formica.

Am I the only one that didn't get it?

I knew what he was talking about, from context, but will confess that after 35+ years in architecture and construction, that's the first time I've ever heard the term "mica." Could be a regional thing. Around here, it's "laminate."

I'm with you Larry; must be a regional thing!

I use powdered mica to lube bottle necked cases while resizing for reloading but for wood projects I use high pressure laminate, Wilsonart brand.

Well, excuuuuuse me. Sorry gang, thought you were hip to the lingo. My mistake for not being specific. Yes, the correct terminology is "high pressure plastic laminate". I don't know if it's a regional thing , but in the trade it's a fairly common term. I've called it other things, especially when it cracks while moving it around.

I'll bet the other name is a common term, and not just in your trade!
