    I'm Jealous

One of my younger brothers got out of the navy two years ago but hasn't really been doing much. He told me tonight that for reasons personal he is moving to RI. He plans to apply to the Rhode Island School of Woodworking and Design. Meantime he will do odd jobs and try to get an apprenticeship at a woodworking shop. I'm biased but I know he has the talent. He is a great artist/sculptor already. I'm a better woodworker but all my work is functional. His is functional art.

      good luck to your bro.

Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) is widely viewed as the premier art school in the country, and their visual art programs are more respected than Yale's.

The furniture design program there is incredible, as students and graduates show in museums all over the world.

hope it works out for him, i plan on doing the same thing in the next couple of years.

here's a pretty cool link for colleges and universities offering furniture design programs:

Wish your brother a lot of luck. Just a little something about instructors. About 20 years ago I thought it would be fun to take an adult education class in woodworking given at a local high school. When signing up with the instructor, started talking with him and found out there would be a slight delay in the starting of the class due to his leaving. We talked about what I was in to and after more talk he asked if I would take over the class. This is when I thought I was on "Candid Camera". I was elated, and disappointed at the same time. I thanked him and turned down the offer.

He pays the tuition, attends classes, pays the tuition, accumulates mass volumes of knowledge!

You pick his brain for the stored mass volumes of knowledge after HE PAID THE TUITION!

I don't see a problem with this scenario.

Just think of the knowledge he is going to have to share with you.

I've already thought of that Pappy - I told him in a few years he can come back here and we can open a shop together.
