    Need metal detector

Want to get a metal detector to look for stray metal in my wood. I have some old 7" X 7" X 15' barn posts that I need to check out. Figured I would be money ahead checking for metal with a metal detector, instead of finding it with my planner, bandsaw, table saw, etc.

I would probably use it mostly for wood working. I can also see using it to find something dropped out in the yard. Not planning on going treasure hunting with it.

Several months ago there was talk about one at HF, but that one was rated at finding something less than 1". Don't think it would work in my case, unless I'm miss understanding something.

This is from the Lumber Wizard description:
"Locates large metal pieces up to 4" deep, a large screw at 3", a medium nail at 2", a paneling nail or staple at 1", through wood."

I'm not sure what they call a large piece, but the HF one I have pretty much does the other stuff in the description. I didn't think it was so good at first, till I got the 'sweeping motion' down. Just holding it still doesn't work, I reckon it has energized coils inside that need movement for the metal to cut the flux field.

Like Ken I have one of the HF units, took a little practice to get the hang of it but it has saved me from putting a nail through the planer more than once.
