David, thank you very much for reporting your experience...
I knew there was some good coming from the Program... but, it seemed I've only been hearing bad things.
I'll bet it makes you feel better working on it...!
Thanks again!!Comment

Probably should scrap the whole program then... I mean, if people are going to be cliquish, then it's just not worth it.It's actually a shame given what the Habitat situation is like here (It may have changed since we last tried to help). All that they do semi-locally is "blitzes". The get big church-sponsored groups together to work all week long on a number of houses at once. What's even more frustrating is how cliquish the church groups can be. Remind me of a bumper sticker I saw: "I have no problem with God. It's his fans that drive me up the wall."Comment

I participated in a neighborhood blitz. I had always heard it was fairly restrictive (my way or the highway), and it kinda was, but to assist folk like MilDoc, and get the job done, it has to be.
MilDoc sed: Still don't know much but worked with a great bunch of folks who were good at directing newbies.
Our worksite was strictly by the book. The trusses were bowed and therefore shortened by a little. We wanted to straighten them out with a chalkline and a nail through to a middle top plate, but that apparently wasn't in the manual, so we weren't allowed to do that. They were by and large pretty good with newbies tho'. You could tell that safety was an important issue. Must have been stressed in the manual
Didn't see any cliques at our site... But hey, if this isn't someone's cup of tea, there are plenty of other opportunities to volunteer. You can't swing a cat without hitting someone in need, and you'll trip over all kinds of organizations that can help out folk in need. Plus, the Gulf Coast is still very devastated in many places. Go down yonder if no where else.Comment
