    A word to the wise...

...never, ever rub your eyes or even put your hands in the vicinity of your face after you have prepared a meal with a habanero pepper.

A friend gave me a little Caribbean Red habanero plant, and I served slices of one of the peppers with dinner yesterday (potato burritos, refried beans, etc.). Even a tiny bite filled the entire mouth with a righteous, white-hot heat. I thought, that is one mother of a pepper! (About 445,000 Scoville units, according to my reference, twice as hot as the usual habanero.)

After dinner, I cleaned up and washed my hands in the bathroom. I noticed something in my eye and without thinking swiped it with my finger. Big mistake. Immediately, I had a sensation of acid being splashed in my eye. Rubbing my eyes not only spread the sensation all over that eyeball, but somehow into the other eye as well. I had been pepper sprayed!

I was literally incapacitated for 10 minutes. Washing out the eyes in the sink was necessary but didn't help the pain. Opening my eyes made the pain worse. The only thing that really helped was putting a cold wet cloth over my closed eyelids. (It was a weird kind of neuritic pain, like a tingly burn, not like a traumatic injury. I could ALMOST experience it as an interesting sensation, like putting BenGay on a sore muscle, if it weren't so doggone intense.)

I'm happy to report, no permanent ill effects. I resolve here and now never to prepare peppers without wearing rubber gloves, never to wipe my eyes after touching said peppers, and to avoid riots and other situations where pepper spray is likely to be used.
    Jeff

I suppose I'll say what a lot of others are thinking.
    DUH!!
    However...been there, done that. OUCH!!!

Oh yeah, don't stick your nose into a pot of chili with fresh habanero added either. It's a little hard on the nose.

Yes, it hurts like blazes. Washing the eyes out with milk would have helped, but now I tell you.

I had a similar incident awhile back and called my Dad for suggestions on how to stop my hands from burning so badly.

the conversation went something like this ...

ME: Hi Dad, question for ya, I was cutting peppers and .... (Dad interrupts at this point)
DAD: .... you went to the bathroom???
ME: uhh .. (chuckle) ... no
          DAD: oh, nevermind then
ME: (chuckle) what were you getting at??
          DAD: just nevermind
          ME: c'mon
          DAD: NEVERMIND
          ME: c'mon
DAD: FINE, that's the mistake I made the last time I cut up peppers
          ME: BWA.... BWAH.... BWAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA
DAD: I'm glad you think it's so funny
ME: (wiping away tears of laughter) .... OWWWEEEEEEEE, MY EYES, MY EYES!!!!! ..... I JUST WIPED MY FREAKIN' EYES
DAD: (chuckle) serves you right (laughter)

So, 2 morals of this story .....

1.) your eyes aren't the only thing you don't want to touch when cutting peppers

2.) never laugh hysterically at someone else's misfortune after you've been cutting peppers
If it ain't broke.. don't fix it!!!... but you can always 'hop it up'

            But wait, there's more.

I had a *similar* experience with cooking some hot Thai food. Now, everyone knows to wash their hands after using the bathroom... However, when dealing with peppers, it's a good idea to do so BEFORE as well. (Even more imperative for persons with X chromosomes).
            To do is to be.

Also be sure to wash your hands with lots of soap, as capsaicin (the active ingredient), is not water soluble. Rinsing with water alone will not remove it from your hands (or other body parts ).

Now I dearly love jalepeno's and eat them often. Should anything hotter than those really be eaten? I am guilty. Can't resist to torture myself sometimes.
You may do everything correctly with regard to preparing and cleaning up and still pay for the abuse of these little suckers the next day. For pepper eaters, I need not explain any further.

                Great story, Thom.

Yes, there is a reason most chefs use disposable gloves when dealing with hot peppers. Scotch Bonnets and Habaneros will do damage hours after preperation. Tasty though.

                    Doc,

I feel (err felt) your pain. Several years back, I was at Chuck E. Cheese for a birthday party. Brought my slr with me to take a few pics. I picked up the camera, put my eye (can you see where this is going?) to the eye piece. The next thing I know, I'm in more pain than I can remember feeling.

I stumbled around...blinded...kids thinking I was joking around. An adult finally came over and led me to a sink.

Turned out a pepper seed from that cracked pepper shaker had gotten on the eye piece, and then in my eye why I went to snap a picture. It looked like I went 18 with Apollo Creed after I could finally see straight!

Thom, loved that story about your Dad. Hysterical.

In the Marines they made us stand in line and sprayed pepper spray right in our eyes. It doesn't just burn, it feels like there is a piece of hot metal under your eyelid. Nothing you can do except suck it up.

                        Two phrases come to mind.

                        "Better you than me"

                        "Learn from others mistakes"

                        Thanks.

                          There's even more!

The oils that generate the heat aren't digested, either, so what goes in must come out....

You want to really have some fun...

                            Serve hot peppers and soda..

Carbonated soda + hot peppers = lots of whining.
