how NOT to spend your weekend ....

After all the work on the house this year, $600'ish for heater core replacement just wasn't in the budget. Come to think of it, a blown heater core wasn't in the schedule either

EVERYONE I talked to said you had to blow the AC system to remove the heater box. Well, it took me a LOT more time, but I managed to keep the AC system intact and swap out the heater core. About 12 hours wrapped up in this job. I surely don't want to see another one for awhile.

Now the rest of the week I'll have to make hay since the grass went unattended this weekend.
If it ain't broke.. don't fix it!!!... but you can always 'hop it up'

Hey Thom, I feel your pain. Today I went to pick up some free bricks Got the trailer all loaded up, went to tie stuff down and flat tire on the trailer. What should have taken a little over an hr took 3. Had to jack the trailer off the van. My dad was closer than my house so I ended up borrowing his compressor and jack so I could reinflate the tire. I was lucky - was able to put a strap around the tire to get the bead back.

How many screws did you have left over when you put it back together?

I'll have to get back to you on that. I only put the 'bare essentials' back together for now, I'm gonna drive it a week that way to make sure there's no problems before I button it up entirely.

I thought the heater core in the Dakota was a pain. At least I don't have to pull the dash out.

Did some work/repairs to both the Dakota and the Boss's Jeep this weekend. E brake handle on the Jeep and swapped out the seats in the Dakota. (Picked up some from an extended cab in a junk yard..think I see a custom fold down arm rest in the near future) A lot of time spent cleaning carpets and upholstery while I had things apart.

Looks like a heck of a thing to have to tear apart. You gotta wonder how they build this stuff sometimes.. First, get a heater core, then build a truck around that heater core...

Of course, the fun of a job like that is doing it with setting off the air bags in your face...

Just thinking about it makes me want to go boating instead...

You've just got to avoid gettin' PO'd and hitting the front bumper with a sledge

Glad to see you got it back together well enough to drive. Sunday morning you sounded like you were more in the mood to let it roll down the hill Pat

I thought the heater core was going out on my '97 Dakota last week. Spent Saturday morning replacing the thermostat and flushing & filling the cooling system. All is well now.

After seeing your pix, I REALLY glad I didn't have to try and do the heater core replacement. Last one I did was on a '75 Chevy PU...that was sooo easy. I miss those big old simple cars & trucks!

I would like to know I could do that in 12 hours. I would need a lot more time than that.
