Coral Snake?

"Shadow" my voracious German Shepherd hunter trapped what looked like a coral snake. I called her out and had to really look at it to see the rings. I remember the saying - "Red and yellow kill a fellow - red and black a friend of Jack". Once I saw what colors were touching, I realized it was a King Snake. Was a little scary for a moment. Let it slither away while holding the dog.

That's a little different from the saying I prefer, which is: "Any snake that gets within sight of me is about to be one dead DEAD DEAD mofo'ing snake."

Last spring was the first one in our new house. I killed 4 copperheads from April through June. Squished one with the car and got the others with my shovel. Haven't seen any this year.

yeah but killing a king snake might make it more likely that you get bit by another.

Yup. That's why I didn't kill the 2 black snakes I saw. They eat the critters and aren't really dangerous.

Since I am color blind if a snake gets close to me and it is not black then it gets its head chopped off.

I almost drove over a rattler on the road to our house--stopped and watched him from 4 feet away as he slithered across the blacktop toward the brush.

I let him go; figured he'd take care of a heap of mice and rats and rabbits and such. I found out later they're protected by law in this area.

Lots of rattlers in this neck of the woods. Lived here for 30 years though and haven't seen one in the yard, but last spring they killed a two footer in the lawn area at the foot of our hill (about a 100 yards below me). Back in June, they photographed a very large (over 4 ft) rattler about a mile west of here, at the the rest area just off Rt 86. IT's a favorite spot for the truckers to pull in at night. (nice surprise if you get out to take a leak in the middle of the night). So, once again the NYDOT had to close the place.

I had no idea the rattle snakes got anywhere close to that size up here; and Yes, it's against the law around here to kill them.

When I was a Navigator stationed in a B-47 outfit in Orlando, FL one of our crews discovered a coral snake in the cockpit after takeoff. Can't land a B-47 soon after takeoff, and they didn't want to chance shooting the critter, so they climbed rapidly to a high altitude without cabin pressurization. Crew had oxygen, snake didn't. End of snake.

we have had good luck with white paintballs for control of unwanted snakes.
it seems the vipers think the unbroken ones are eggs and eat them for what turns out to be a last meal. worked on some Copperheads

We don't have snakes in Hawaii only in the zoo, but some stupid people try to smuggle them in or they hitch a ride on our cargo. So there are some snakes caught or turned in at our docks & airports, makes the local news all the time. Luckily our Ag & custom animal control agents are on the ball.
