The "Scream" (or why my theory of existence came crashing down!)

Police recovered Munch's "The Scream" yesterday. (link:http://www.ibiblio.org/wm/paint/auth...nch.scream.jpg)

Does this mean the existentialists had it all wrong?!

    That's great,

But weren't about a dozen similar versions done by Munch. I seem to remember something like that.

I don't get it. What does a Munsch painting have to do with existentialism?

        David,

Beats me, but it sounds pretty good.

Nope. He did four versions of The Scream. The other one was stolen a couple of years ago and was recovered shortly thereafter.

                the joke is....

The joke is that the Scream was kinda like a paean to existentialsim. It captured the essence, stood as a pictoral for the angst and unknowningness of existentialism. Of course, existentialsim put way too simply, is asking "what is it all about" or "why?" or, perhaps better, "What are the answers, are there any answers?" Is it all a mystery?

So, when this thing was stolen, it was kinda very fitting since it mimicked the purpose of the painting. Why [was it stolen]? What's it all about? What are the answers? It was a mystery, the still art became performance art.

Now, that the police solved the whole thing, its been all blown to smithereens. There are answers, it is not a mystery. We know why (and who, what, where, how, etc.).

So, does this mean the existentialists had it all wrong?

[okay, when you go and explain it its kinda stupid. But it was a slow day and I was a philosophy major. Well, I got a kick out of it!]

I'm glad you explained it. I was flippin' out for a while there, wondering what you meant.

                      Curt,

You seriously have way too much free time. You need a hobby, hey, how about woodworking.

Then you can get into George Nakashima's Zen approach to building stuff.

Oh, great. So you're supposed to be doing some kind of Zen thing? How come I always look like Munch's guy in Scream when I'm in the shop?

This thread is really bringing me down, man.

                          JR,

Don't thake it to heart, all this metaphysical bull, is just that, BULL. I won't speak for the others, but I was just having fun having one of my anti-intellectual episodes with these posts.

You're not loosing your mind, in fact, you're being honest about about not understanding (along with about 97% of the honest part of the population) all this "New York/LA" type of "high-brow" nonsence.

Given the choice, I'd rather have a full bottle of Jack Daniels and a bunch of Lucinda Williams CD's any time.

                            NY/LA Nonsense?

I'll have you know I'm from one of the flyover states! and proud of it! I'm married to a Jersey Girl, so stuck here now. But, personally, I don't think people from LA are bright enough to get it, and people in NY would think it was so yesterday.

So, I'll go ply my wares in the Great Lakes region, a land of honest and thoughtful folk.
