    Trying to keep up appearance

Who puts away tools at the end of each day in the shop?
Because it's in my basement I would normally leave everything as it is each evening. Last week I started doing some packup and cleanup each day. I try to limit it to 30minutes. So far I'm getting about 85% done. What I like is that in the morning the shop looks a little more inviting. I don't know how long I will keep this up, I just hope it turns into a habit.
I guess a clean shop makes a happy WW, or does it really.

I try my best to clean up my shop at the end of each day - not Kirby good though!

I just like to put my tools away and make sure the floor and ww machines are free of sawdust. I find it's much nicer walking into a reasonably clean shop in the morning than facing a mess to clean up first thing(I've had to do that too).

Never enough time! If I don't put something away when I am done using it, it stays out for WAY too long. Get in and STAY in the habit.

          What can I say

Seriously - there are many times I don't do a complete cleanup.

BUT; if I'm taking pics for this bunch - I'm very careful - so there!

I used to use every minute of shop time working on the project, leaving little time for clean up - but as Howie said, it sure looks more inviting when you can go in and find all the tools, screws and what ever to get started on a project quickly.

Sometimes I am asked to do something that takes 15 to 20 minutes when all I have it 10 to 15 minutes. In cases like that I leave the tools, glue, etc. scattered about until later. Sure is frustrating.

My greatest problem is having almost more tools, wood and parts than I have space for in my 9 by 12 shed - so I have to be organized to be able to find things or not trip over tools or wood.

Same here. Everything has to be in it's place to close up. Exception is if I am working on something in the house. Tools will stay out until the job is done or in my workroom at the end of the house.

I usually have SOMETHING going (in some stage of completion) in one corner or another at any given time, which makes it difficult to store everything every night. I usually get back to "square one" about once a week, though.

An ongoing cleanup is a lesson I've learned many times and still don't practice it. When working, to have a work area continually cleared of debris (not just dust) to include cut-offs, sheet stock, loose boards. I have danced around junk in my day to know that it's a hazard and dangerous. Making sure the area where you work, table saw surface, things around the router table, or bumping a loose board standing against the wall, is free from getting in your way. For example, like in the cartoons, stepping on the floor broom by accident, then getting whapped in the head by the handle.

I don't really have much of a choice as the garage is the workshop and LOML insists on having both vehicles in the garage at night. Is a bit of a pain when I haven't finished my project and I have actually gotten away with leaving my vehicle outside overnight on occasion. I do enjoy getting the sawdust off the tools before I put them up. When I get a shop, all bets are off!

I got in the habit of continual clean-up from working with teenagers building scenery. Ya can't be trippin' over the junk or ya'll get hurt.

Used to drive my classes crazy--I refused to let them leave until the work area was clean. The only exception was work in progress--that got to stay out for the next class.

Right now my new shop is a pit. I need to build some cabinetry and stuff so I can put everything away. Right now there are piles everywhere.

I'm not exactly Mr. Clean (nor Mr. Kirby), but I learned a long time ago that if I put a tool away when I'm done, then I know where to find it the next time.

Since I have ADD, putting stuff away is a real help.

Being retired I pretty much work on a project until it's finished. I neaten up, put away tools and materials I'm finished with, after each step. The shop itself, power tools, bench tops and floors get cleaned when I finish the project.

It never gets "Kirby Klean," that's just simply beyound my capabilities.

One thing about having a small shop is that space is a premium at all times. I have gotten to the point to where I put things up after I use them even if it means taking them back out for another task a bit later. I have been on a quest to get my shop under control and more work friendly for me. I am doing things like creating work areas for different processes. That way every thing I need for a particular type of task will be at that location. I know I will never achieve the status of a “Kirby worthy” shop but getting it under control where I don’t have to look for things would sure be nice.

I guess I am somewhere in the middle. I put away most tools as I work, if they are not to be used immediatley, but repeated use tools get left out. Before I start a new project, I completly clean up the shop before I start.
