                      OK, here's what happened. I tried 3 restarts, removed motherboard from case, checked all the solder connections, took my mouse apart and checked the clicker part twice. Cables are fine, thought the cat chewed through one of them. Put everything back together. Cleaned the screen, and I can see clearly now (remember that song?).
