A Bone to Pick (not really)

In one of the other forums (tool talk) there is a post about TS Envy.

I tell you that is nothing compared to what I feel. I am suffering from Posting envy.

Everyone on this site is extremely helpful, knowledgeable and willing to share that knowledge.

It makes a newbie with a trick or two green with envy.
Or is the reflection from paint on the table saw?

Seriously, you are all great. I am glad I have found this fount of knowledge.

I do have a contest for us. Lets try to find a topic the someone on this site does not know about. I for one do not believe the topic exists.

    Humbly

What do you think was the single most important event of the 20th century?
And you have to explain why.

Well, for me,personally, it was 5/25/47.

      My birthday

Seriously, I'm finding it difficult to nail down one event, the last 100 years have has so many — first major use of automobiles and aircraft, 2 world wars (and Korea and 'Nam), assasinations, 9/11... The list just goes on and on and I think we're still a bit too close to really pick one. Ask me again in 50 to 100 years...

If we're gonna play the game, the directions said "To pick a subject no one knows about", not a multiple choice game. It has to be something like LIFE AFTER DEATH, or WHAT'S IT LIKE TO DIE.

Easy. Female logic. Show me a guy who says he understands women and I will show you a liar.

Now 'importance' is a very subjective thing. However, I think that Hiroshima might have been it. It marks a most profound shift in global politics. Before, an 'all-out war' between major nations meant a whole lot of small-scale damage, mostly involving each-other's military, unless specifically targeting civilians (what is the effective damage radius of the largest non-nuclear bomb?), and area bombed was immediately occupiable.

And then suddenly, 'all-out war' started meaning total mutual annihilation, affected area becoming an irradiated wasteland unfit to live in for years. The century already saw international conflicts escalate into two World Wars - but when it became apparent that World War III would be the end of mankind, it ushered in an age of caution and was the major factor in shaping the subsequent global history.

I'd submit it was July 20, 1969. Man's first step on another planet (some astronomers maintain that the Earth/Moon system is actually a double planet).

An astounding technological achievement, especially given the technology of the time. We can't duplicate it today.

Another candidate in my mind is the advent of talking motion pictures. Talkies had a profound impact on entertainment, and thus how we see and think about ourselves.

I was going to suggest ancient Druidic rites, but then I realized we got that one covered...

Re' biggest accomplishment of the 20th century--mass production of the automobile, no doubt about it. Changed forever every aspect of the way we live.

How about biggest failure? IMO that'd be the fact that every few years we have to fight a war to end all wars. We haven't figured out how to keep that from happening, despite much experience.

I have highligthed the key part of my assumption based on the line above.

The topic I had in mind was Neil Astrong & crew landing on the moon. Basically if you were under 10 at the time it can be assumed that it would not have mattered much to those of that age.
However I believe it is the single event in all of mans history that showed that we are capable of going outside of the common confines of our planet and that we are capable of so much more than we ever thought possible.

There will be those here who a aware of this event but it either means little to them or they know little if anything about it and the significance of the way we changed our view of the world and its environs.

Therefore if you are under the age of 40 it is likely you know little or nothing about the topic.

I had a lot of thoughts on this. The bikini was invented 50 years ago! Mini-skirts seem to rank right up there too, but I think one thing that made a profound difference in a lot or our lives was the invention of the internet.
