    Cummins Truckload Sale: Pointless?

In todays mail was a flyer for a Cummins Truckload Sale in the neighborhood early next week. Looking through the flyer it seems to me that the reconditioned tools are similarly to new tools during a sale in one of the box stores. Other than that a bunch of odds and ends, but nothing priced to sell I thought.

Didn't those sales used to be the great place to find deals? We never had one that close before. Am I missing something?

i have picked up some good deals thru Cummins, but not recently. Just haven't had anything I needed. Next time they come around, I will get another 14.4V drill kit. Finally smoked one of mine.

We've got one going on in town right now. I tried to look at the flyer, but it was too busy for me, so I went to the sale last night. Looked like a couple of possible good deals, but the refurbs were almost as expensive as new retail. For example, they had a BT3100 floor model for $180. Heck, I'd rather spend the little extra and buy new. I was thinking of one of the refurbed electric chainsaws they have for $30. I can get the exact same saw new at Sears for $40. Plus, if you're looking to buy Ridgid, you'd probably be better off buying new at HD so you can get the lifetime warranties.

Just my observations from last night.

The Cummins near my house really hasn't shown me much. The refurbed tools are nearly as expensive (and sometimes more expensive, especially 18v batteries) than new. I have bought a couple of cheapie extension cords that were OK. Most of the stuff is junk, lower on the scale than HF.

You might score a good deal, but don't hold your breath.

Thanks, that pretty much confirmed my thoughts.

            Have to disagree.
I went to one of their sales last year to buy a recon planer for $250.00 (a Ridgid), about $100 off new price. I bought it, then was called back by the "manager." Seems they had misplaced the dust collector hood. He offered it to me for $150. I hesitated and he dropped the price to $125. Well ... I bought the dust collector on line for about $20. Total ... $145 for a great planer!

Now, I will admit that most of what they sell is "just OK", but you can get some terrific bargains!

They have some things that are good for the price, just make sure that you go as soon as they open the first day. The one I went to was looked really cleaned out when I went 4-5 hours after they opened.

It is kind of fun to look around - kind of like going to Harbor Freight during a sidewalk sale... watching all the people loading up on cheap crappy tools.

Sometimes you get lucky though - this time they had sets of replacement sanding sleeves for my Ryobi spindle sander for $3.03 - that's quite a bit cheaper than Home Depot sells them.
