Well put me down as the third of the group. I remember sitting in the ER, tears in my eyes, begging my wife to find me a nice cold floor to lay on in a dark area. She found a secluded hallway for me to lay in. They are horriable.
You've probably tried the standards, Imitrex,, Maxalt, etc. They helped a little but back when I was in college I couldn't afford them. My medical plan today will cover 6 doses per month due to costs.
Wikipedia says similar to brain freeze. That is a huge load of BS! The analogy of burning ice pick through the eye is much better.
I got them a lot in college. I thought I had brain tumor or something. Friends would drive me around in middle of the winter with my head out the window for the coolness.
My triggers are heat from heating system, alcohol (a few years ago it would happen every time I had a couple drinks. In college same issue, except I would continue pounding drinks until I couldn't feel it!), perfume (Poison is literally poison to me!). The cycle starts at unknown period but usually in winter months. Nothing really stopped the pain for me. The Maxalt and Imitrex shortened the duration (which was exactly 50 minutes untreated). I have tried snorting ice cold water because that just seemed right. No help.
Wikipedia says LSD and magic mushrooms may help. That is exactly what I need. Come off a 50 minute painfest into a 8 hour nightmare ride. Your brain would be exhausted for days.
I will add an interesting note. My last cycle was 05/27/05. I was getting them at 2:50 AM. I thought, hey if I have some NSAIDs in me before it happens that may help. I had also been reading about the effects of drinking water and o2 treatments. I set my alarm clock for 2:00 AM, woke up and quickly drank 2 liters of water and took 800 mg of Ibuprofin and a prescription dose of Alleve. Woke up at 2:50 and I could feel the oncoming pain but it never got above say 70% of normal pain. The following night I did the same thing and woke up at about 3:10 AM with some discomfort, maybe 40% of normal. Day 3 of my made up treatment I actually slept through the night. I could feel the residue tension and soreness behind my eye, so I know it happened but not as severe. I continued this for about 7 more days and it never woke me up again. I have not had a cycle since 05/27/05 but am probably pretty much due for one. I have absolutely no idea why the water/NSAID thing worked for me. I do not know if it will work for anyone else. I don't know if maybe I was at the end of the cycle (though I was about a week into it and they usually last 6 weeks or so). But I would highly suggest that 1 hour prior to your usual onset, drink as much water as you humanly can and take 800mg of ibuprofen and 500 mg of Naproxen Sodium (Naprosyn) both availiable OTC. I have zero medical training and you are obviosuly responsible for your own treatment but hey if it works it would be a God send.
Good luck folks!
