Goin' to Kansas City, Kansas City here I come...

I'll be in KC for a week starting July 9. I have a student who will be in rehearsal 12 hrs a day, which leaves me with PLENTY of free time. Anybody know of a good hardware/tool/lumber store in the area?

    I hear there's a Cabela's near KC, too.

Lastly, where can I get some REALLY good barbeque?

    Many thanks!

Tool, hardware, lumber store? Hmmmm. Woodcraft on 87th Street in Overland Park but there's probably one in Saint Louis also. Overland Tool at about 91st and Nieman in Overland Park sells woodworking power tools and have an impressive showroom. Strasser Hardware on Southwest Boulevard has anything you expect in a hardware store.

Cabela's in Kansas City, Kansas is very close to the instersection of I 70 and I 435 (435 makes a loop around the city and this would be the west side). It's in Village West shopping center there's other stuff in there like Nebraska Furniture Mart and Famous Dave's barbeque restaurant and more stores than I'll ever go into (no tool or wood stores). Also has the Yardhouse over 100 different beers on tap if you're so inclined - never drank Budweiser in there - save that for my trips to St. Louis.

Barbeque? Jack's Stack in Martin City (south side of KC although I think they have one closer to downtown also), Arthur Bryant's downtown, Hayward's in Overland Park,

There is an older hardware store that I like to visit, occassionally, Harry J Epstein Co. (816) 421-4752 301 W 8th St . You can search them on the web (some usefull, but also humor factor, 6' vernon caliper).
As for BBQ, even among one of the ones previously listed (Arthur Bryant's), several people I have talked to, said the new one (at one of the riverboats) isn't anywhere close to the old.
Two other popular ones are Bates city BBQ, and Gates.

By the way, you have a pm.
      Thanks
She couldn't tell the difference between the escape pod, and the bathroom. We had to go back for her.........................Twice.

There is a Cummins on 63rd Street (aka Shawness Mission Parkway) in Shawnee. Good source of rebuilt Ryobi tools.

For BBQ, I vote for Haywards. I started going there when it was a little place on a strip mall. Now they have a larger place of their own next to Corporate woods. Near the intersection of College Boulevard and Antioch. Steer head in the entry area but pretty plain interior. I typically order a regular sandwich (need a big stomach or fridge for a large), onion rings, and a beer. Can't be beat. They will mix meats on the sandwich. Making me hungry.

Thanks for the responses and suggestions, guys. I'm sitting in the hotel now, munching on what's left of a Minsky's pizza and basking in the afterglow of a Cardinals victory over the Astros.

Tomorrow I have a carload of students to take to rehearsal, then it's off to the stores, (I LOVE little mom & pop hardware stores--they have cool little thingies I don't know I need until I see them) a little lunch, and back to the school for taxi duty.

I might do some welding if the scene shop kids need help. I'll probably set fire to my shoes again, but what the heck...

New shop is arriving July 18!!!!!

The Cummins mentioned above is also within a mile of a Harbor Freight. There are two tool stores that cater to the trades within the same stretch of road as well. About 3 miles west of there, a Lowes and Home Depot sit across from each other.

Try to find Schutte Lumber on Southwest Boulevard (take I35 to the Cambridge Circle exit then go over the tracks, it dumps you right on their parking lot) if you wanna look at some hardwood. They have a cull bin where I get cutoffs for a quarter (hit or miss). Get some Mexican food while you're on the Boulevard (you'll have a dozen joints to pick from), and wash it down with Boulevard beer. Also, Strasser Hardware is on the boulevard, as close to an old-time hardware store as you're likely to encounter in the 21st century.
