I know I will have few stones thrown at me for this post but from the perspective of view of former engineer this clearly shows how inefficient our language is. You can make so many changes to the text that is supposed to be typed and people still recognize what you meant. Now imagine that you had transposed numbers in some financial report like you just transposed letters in a text. What are the chances anybody would be able to read that report correctly? It means our language wastes characters and could be made shorter but it also makes our language more resilient. Without it if you miss one letter in the conversation on the street because of a noise you would have to start the conversation over since there is no way to recover what you have missed.
