we don't blow off the rules because

because even though you're sure the block is in the right place and the nails are staggered, the 15 ga finish nail you're shooting just might somehow hit the other nail. it might blow out the side of the block you're holding and it just might go through 2 of your fingers. if it does it'll wreck the rest of your weekend.

i'm ok, just got a real sore hand and feel pretty stupid for thinking i could get away with shortcuts.

Bummer! I have seen blowout a few times, and always had to take a deep breath and count my blessings that my fingers were not close. But I did also catch myself having my hand where a blow out could have been. I usually take myself by the side and have a stern talk to myself. Hope I'll learn.

          Good luck with the healing!

Remember, doesn't have to hit another nail or any obstruction, just the stress / grain / etc of the wood itself. I've had the first nail driven blow out the side. Be careful!

MilDoc is right, it can happen for any reason. You will not see me holding a piece of wood within 6" of where my framing nailer is shooting nails. I've seen a 16d nail do a U turn.

I'll look at the piece tomorrow. I thought sure I was away from the other nails but it sure did turn. Soft pine 2x2 it was but I guess something else could have turned it. I dunno.

Its awful sore but I expected worse. Likely tomorrow for the real soreness. Thanks for all the replies.

surprizingly, soreness is not much worse this morning. the end of my middle finger (the one it went all the way through) is swollen pretty good but index finger (partial penetration) doesn't look bad except for having a hole in it. hoping i don't lose the nail on middle finger but initial penetration was right off the edge of it.

looking at the wood i can see that the nail that turned was nowhere near any other nail. i don't know what caused it to turn but it went in about 3/8" and then basically turned out at a 90 degree angle to the place where it entered the wood. just southern pine, no apparent knots or anything; I don't really understand :/

At least you stopped at one by accident instead of 15 in the head on purpose.
All joking aside, hope you heal quick. Perhaps your reminder will prevent another from a similar event.

NEOSPORIN, the one with pain killer work pretty good. Speeds up healing and stops infection. Having worked as a mechanic i've used a lot of it.
