    Outlook XP Problem

Upgraded from Office 2000 to Office XP, which included Outlook update. I imported all my setting but can not get email to send or receive through gmail POP. It previously worked so there has been no changes on Gmail server.
When I open Outlook and hit Send/Receive the progress screen comes up and you see the tasks. It says evmocas@gmail.com - Sending and Receiving - Progress Processing. The line below it says the same. It times out after a few minutes. Error says :
Task 'evmocas@gmail.com -Sending and REceing' reported error (0x8004210B) 'The operation timed out waiting for a response from the sending (SMPT) server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or ISP'

    Another error below for receiving.

Any ideas on what is wrong here?

Tried to set it up per gmail help. Now getting error saying it has contacted server, but i need to verify SSL and port info is correct. I still get the other errors as well.

Edit: think i fixed it. Needed "This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL)" to be checked under advanced settings.

    hi jeffrey,

it sounds like there might be a problem with the way your email account is setup in outlook. maybe you've already done this, but if not, first thing to do is check your outlook settings for incoming mail server(POP3) and outgoing mail server (SMTP).

You can access them in outlook by clicking on the tools bar, then 'email accounts'; click 'view or change existing accounts' and click 'next'; highlight your gmail account and click 'change'. now verify that your pop3 and smtp server settings are correct for gmail. i don't have a gmail account so i'm not sure what those settings are.

if there o.k. then check the following:

Gmail requires a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). Gmail uses POP3 port number 995 and Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) port number 465. These settings are not the default for a POP3 account in Outlook and require you to modify account settings in Outlook.

so, have a look at those as well and see how they are setup. they can be accessed by clicking on the 'advanced settings' tab at the bottom of the same form you use to view/change the pop3 and smtp settings. click on 'advanced' and make sure you click on secure socket layers and enter in the required port numbers for each.

    good luck!

Nope. THey are set correctly. Oddly enough a Penn State Industries email came through just now but the BT3 notice did not. It is on the gmail server.

Do you have the options under your advance mail settings checked for SSL authentication? Do you have the 'this server requires authentication' checked for your SMTP server? Under your advanced mail settings what is the server timeout set to? Maybe make it a little longer?

Is the SSL thing where it says "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication" and has a check box there? It is checked.

          2 minutes time out setting.

The Error I get during the test says "Send test e-mail message: Unable to send test Message. Please verify the E-mail Address field."
