Jim, you're assuming that we trust you now??!!

Noooo, I don't need no stinking Ford truck.

Good luck with the new 'position', bud.

You're gonna have to stock up on ties and chunky gold jewelry...

There was an article on Edmunds.com about the confessions of a car salesman, but I've misplaced the link.

More power to ya! I HATE sales.... (trying to make them, not the kind at Rockler--those I jump on).

        Hey Jim,

We might have a deal if you throw in 3 years of free gas (petrol, that is) not car salesman hot air.

BTW, I'm sending you a package today, things got much weirder than usual at home and I got stuck in the middle of 3 insane women, not counting 3 female cats and a ***** minature Poodle.

        Bruce.
and yes I'm still somewhat sane.
        Thanks for your patience

Don't trust him. I paid my way through college selling Nissans and Mazdas. First maxim of auto sales . . . . If you can't make money off your friends and family, you can't make money. LOL!

Just kidding and good luck. You can make a lot of money in auto sales. I think that the last few years would have been spectacular, since folks were so much more relaxed about buying due to the perceived deals in financing/rebates. Don't get me wrong, I don't think the average dealership gross fell by much during those events, however the public really responded, particularly to GM.

Be proactive. Don’t get hung up in the bull pin with all the other salesmen. One thing is for sure and that is that they are not going to buy a car from you (remember this as this has been the down fall of many). Don’t “pre-qualify” people by eyeball. A dirtball will buy a $60,000 Escalade and a millionaire will buy a Focus. Don’t worry about your margin, focus on the sale. Knocking one out of the park is nice, but volume is king, ESPECIALLY if you are on a tiered commission schedule. I have sold 20 Maximas in a month at a “mini” deal making only $100 per sale, but those numbers pushed me into the maximum commission level of 60% of gross on my higher gross used cars.

Sometimes I wonder why I don’t go back to the biz, as I made a ton of money. The answer is, as others have stated, sales is tough. Starting the beginning of the money at zero is hard. Going a week without selling a car, while other are selling one every day is tough.

Also, try to remain as dumb about the deal as possible. If you have no idea what a persons trade in is worth you will feel much better about making a offer put together by the management desk. Likewise, try to ignore the cost of the vehicle you are selling. In auto sales, knowledge is not really a great thing. The most successful car salesperson I ever saw was at a Mazda dealership. The managers neighbor was tired of staying at home and wanted to come sale cars. She knew NOTHING about cars, their values, etc. I will admit that she was hot, tanned and blonde, so that probably helped. This lady could walk over to a person, offer to sell them a car at full MSRP while giving them $5000 for their 2005 Honda Accord trade in. To her it was not a bad deal, so she was very confident in offering it. It was amazing.

Well Jim for us to come and buy a car from it would have to be "one sweet deal" like FREE. Just kidding. If we were down in that area and were looking for a new car we would come and see ya.

Good luck on the new job...sell lots of cars and trucks...and don't wear any plaid polyester suits with "lots" of gold chains and your hair slicked back... Thats just something that I can't picture...well I can but its a scary mental image.

                        GOOD LUCK AND HAPPY SELLING

Thanks for the encouragement! Well you won't see me wearing any gold stuff, I have not even wore a watch for the last 7 years. The only 2 Fords I can pick out of a crowd are a Mustang and a PU The trainer stressed about not pre-qualifing "ups" for the reasons Jeff points out. It is definately going to be different From what I've seen I "should" do OK because I don't let it bother me is someone tells me no and I don't get excited over anything

You should watch a reality show on TV called 'King of Cars'. It is about a dodge dealer in Texas I think. Can't remember what channel it is on.

it's on discovery and the dealer is in Las Vegas. they claim to be the largest dealer in the US, they sell 30- 40 cars a day! it's an interesting show.

good luck on the new job. it's certainly a job I wouldn't want.
