    Improving my mower

    My rider has an annoyance safety feature where when you shift into reverse with the blade engaged it shuts the mower off. Apparently I am too stupid to backup and mow at the same time. Anyhoo, if you have a Troy-bilt Pony tractor, you can take off the cover around the gear shift.

    There is a yellow wire attached to the underside of the cover. Disconnect the cable and you can mow in reverse.

      Doesn't mowing in reverse put the grass BACK ON???
      ...eight, nine, TEN! Yep! Still got all my fingers!

              My John Deere has this handy little button. Press it when you go into reverse and the blades keep spinning.
              Apparently, the logic is that if you're intelligent enough to remember this, you won't get into trouble mowing backwards.

                  Seems like a silly safety feature to me. What if you have a small area in the yard that you can drive forward into but can't turn around in. Would that be a one way trip and you would have to drag the mower back out and restart it?
                  You can't run yourself over because if you get off the seat it also shuts down.
                  Probably some knucklehead ran over his cat going backward and sued the manufacturer. Hey.....that gives me an idea!!!!!!!! ;-) here kitty kitty kitty..............

                      Salty, you can disengage the blade and back up. The ignition gets shorted if the blade is engaged and the mower is put into reverse. It is a PUTT (pain in the tuckus) to have to do that.

                      Funny related story: I spent 10yrs as a kid mowing our lawn with my dad's rider. Had that thing down to some automatic moves. Then moved out of the house and didn't touch a mower for years until I mowed his lawn with his JD that has the hydrostatic drive - no gear shift. The road is about 8' lower than the front yard. I took the mower up to the edge of the bank, stomped my left foot on the clutch/parking brake (not a stopping brake) reached down for a gear shift that wasn't there and drove over the edged of the bank.

                      I was headed straight down so didn't get hurt. It did occurr to me to raise the blade though. At the bottom, just drove around up the driveway and kept mowing. He was watching but neither one of us said a word until I got done and he asked if I wanted to finish mowing the bank.

                          Actually you can mow in reverse or the pony but there is a special sequence on the key one has to follow similar to the button push. At least this is true or my pony purchased last year. However I've never had need to use it.

                              On our John Deere we have a little button that we push to back up with the mower engaged. It if very nice to have and we have one of the new hydrostatic drives, just have a pedal to go and a parking break. It really nice to have it for our almost acre of lawn.

                                  Talking about mowing the lawn.. just finished my acre and I figure it cost me about $4 in gas
