    X-box dissasembly

When we bought our sons X-box a couple of years ago we chose it because the laser in the other games were not lasting too long. I think the laser is broken on his unit and for some models you can ebay a replacement for 15 to 20 + Shipping. I just need to get inside it to verify the model of laser. How do I get into the darn thing. No screws visible anywhere on it. Do I need to take a saw to it????

You need to take out 4 screws to get into the X-Box. All are located under the rubber feet pads. Gently pull these off and get some 2-sided carpet tape or similar to refasten them when you are finished. You will need two common sizes of Torx bits for this. (I don't remember which, but they were part of the 3 I received in my Craftsmen screw driver set, so I assume they are the most common.) Removing the DVD drive is pretty simple, just a couple screws and two cables. I replaced my DVD drive while I was moding the box with a 250 Gb hard drive and chip, so I can run games from the hard drive and not have to worry about the discs.

If you get stuck, I'll see if I can help.

Thanks I thought the screws might be under the feet so i pried one up a little but didn't see anything. guess I needed to peel it back further. Jim

They hide in there. Most people pry up the outside of the feet and they are all the way to the inside.

I think there is also a screw under one or two of the labels on the bottom. I take my fingernail and run over the label until I find the dimple for the hole.

If at first you don't succeed, deny you were trying in the first place.

Mike, you are right. I forgot about those. I believe it is under two of the labels. I sliced a circle with a knife.

You need to be comfortable with soldering on intricate boards. If it is an XBox 1.0, you will have to desolder the entire header area. If it is 1.1-1.5, it is easier. With 1.6, you have to solder a bridging board an do a couple extra things. Then there is the setup of the BIOS and hard drive and deciding which dashboard to use.

Short answer, no. It isn't easy if you aren't good with a soldering iron and software (understanding partitions, using FTP, networking, etc.) Doing a search for XBox hacks will bring you to many of the sites that sell the chips and have instructions.

I used an X3 chip with XBox Media Center as a dash, the X3 bios that you have to get on IRC and a large Hard drive.
