    More personal info needed

Of late, perhaps due to the new format, members are disclosing less personal information.

When I am responding to a post I often go to the poster's personal page so that I can address them by name. I also like to know where they live and what they do etc.

In the over three years I have been here I have never had anyone abuse my information or my email. I think everyone is pretty trustworthy here.

So, let us know a little bit about yourself.

    Steve

Also, is there any way the avatars could be "click to expand"? My old eyes can't tell what some of them represent.

Agreement here too!. What is it that people are afraid to at least give their name? Secret agent or something.

It sure is hard for me to address someone as BT4U or something like that.

Now to address someone as "Pappy" . . .

Complete agreement here Steve. I like the member conditions at Sawmill Creek, although the member name could be false, I haven't run across any that are 'yet'.
            SMC isn't BT3Central tho!

Its been said that BT3 Central is like a family. Should'nt family members know each others name ?

                  Names

Add me to the list of those in favor, and I use my real name, if I didn't want to, I would have made up something more "dashing", like Termiteman or WoodNymph (although, isn't that for a woman)

I have nothing against using my real name here...but when I initially registered here, I didn't realize that the "login" name was what would be displayed so prominently on each post. Now that I've been here awhile, I don't want to start over with a new name.

                        hi,

although i'd prefer to see names used for logons(full or first name only), i don't really mind acronyms etc. as long as the posters sign the posts with at least their real first name - i.e. bob, bill, jack etc. - OR, they have their name(s) shown in the signature line.

i've often thought that maybe the best thing to do when all we have is a logon like 'grizzly942' is to maybe just use that to address the poster - 'hi grizzly942', or, 'hi BT4xx'!!

maybe the poster will agree it seems awkward and add a little more info. or, maybe that's just how they want to be addressed - so, let's just do that.

This thread is heading off topic a tad - which is normal for us - BUT the original post was about people who do not list their name in their personal page or anywhere.

I too go to the personal page when someone new logs in. I like to find out something about them if possible, such as where they are from, what kind of work that they do, or at least their name.

When I see something of a person's background, it helps at times to guide me in my answers. If I see they have a hobby that is related to woodworking or if they are from a "construction" background, it helps me understand that they know machinery but are probably missing the fine WW techniques.

Take for instance the recent thread on putting up gutters. A person who does not know anything about house repairs and just took up woodworking as a hobby for the first time - I would tell them to let the professionals do it. But a person who has done considerable house repairs, WWking or room add ons, I wouldn't hesitate to suggest methods and ideas. Ususally much of this information on low posters or new posters (if not stated in the post itself) is gathered in the persons personal information.

People who register without personal information do not know how much they are missing. If they register withOut a name, I can safely assume that they do NOT want to be close to this "family" of woodworkers. That is OK but they will miss the personal touch/response that goes the extra mile.

I agree with at least putting your name in your signature.
If your friends call you by a nickname, then why shouldn't we?
I only used Bigsteel because when we did the switch over here, I couldn't log on and created a new name for myself. I seem to use the new one more than the old one (Bigfoot15) now.
I also contributed under Bigsteel, so will probably never use bigfoot.
