    Sore lungs

    My shop is in a state of disarray, but I just had to get some work done. So, when I couldn't find my face mask, I just went ahead and did some woodworking. Cut and sanded a lot of birch ply with my BT3100 and random orbital sander. Nice, fine, birch ply dust. Before the day was out, my lungs started complaining. Two days later, one feels fine but the other is really painful. Left lung, upper lobe.

    Next time, I'll drive to HD and get a mask, even if I know I already have one buried somewhere!

      I hear there are a lot of lung-diseases based on long-term exposure to all kinds of fine particulate matter: coal, asbestos, cotton, man-made fibres, volatile chemicals, etc...

      I think we are well adviced to wear masks, and treat them as goggles in terms of safety neccessities...

          Have you had previous problems with saw dust? May I ask your age? I think this is one of those problems that tends to be cumulative. The older you get, the more your exposure, the more sensitive to it you are. But I may be wrong. Having recently hit forty, I'm more focussed on the issue than I was when I was younger.

              I'm 58. Have had a couple similar short-term lung pain incidents in the past few years, involving not just saw dust but also dust inhaled while working in the crawl space under my house. Could well be gradually heightening sensitivity. In any case, I've learned my lesson . . . . again . . .

                  I had a similar issue once after cleaning an animal cage with play sand substrate. My wife actually called 911 on me; they put me on O2 for a few minutes and I could breath again. I no longer use play sand in my cages, just aspen shreddings, and I wear a mask when I clean them. Different material, likely same issue though.
