Sorry for dragging up an old discussion, but I thought I should add some more to this.
This past Sat., wife was encouraging (nagging) me to cut the grass. Went to Sears and bought a new battery and ignition switch just to see if I could keep from jumping it off again.
After at least an hour of cussing, puching, hitting, kicking and generally acting like my 4 year old, I got it running. Here's what I did.
1. Installed new battery without connecting the wires.
2. Removed old ignition switch. New one of course didn't fit. Cleaned the old one. Also took AC and blew out the wiring harness. After hooking up the battery, spark, but no fire.
3. Baking soda and water on positive battery cable. Didn't help. Took a file and filed a good bit until I could see a lot of clean copper. Test fire. Success!
As luck would have it, then the drive belt jumped off the pully. Need to replace that. Anyway, I really think the cleaning the battery cable and the wiring harness did the trick. However, if it doesn't fire the next time I go to cut, there may not be enough of the mower left to put two pieces back together. I'm tired of fixing it. Hope to save enough cash in the next year or two to replace with a ZTR.
Anyway, hope this helps the OP.
