    Frontier Justice

I don't agree with this, but at the same time it solves my problem. A couple months ago I reported a neighbor to Animal control cause his 4 boxers kept coming onto my property. I figured the next time it happened I'd pen the dogs and take them to the shelter as a stray. Didn't expect much to happen but a week or so later I stopped seeing the dogs anywhere. Today i found out why.

Talked to another neighbor who said the dogs were bothering his horse and another guy's chickens and smaller farm animals - apparently they killed one. Anyhoo they both talked to the first neighbor a couple times about the dogs. He said 'screw you, do what you gotta do'. So they poisoned the dogs - all but one who now stays home. So it solves my problem but definitely not the approach I would have taken.

    Oh Well,

People need to control their animals.

I would not concern myself any farther with it.

They poisoned the symptom, not the cause. How is that justice? Poor dogs... There are no bad dogs, just bad owners.

It is a shame that the animals were harmed because of their owner's lack of control, but he is the only one who should feel guilty about it. It is also a shame, however, that a more sensible solution could not be worked out, and hopefully the dogs' owner will not feel compelled to "do what he's gotta do".

          David,

Although it's Easter Sunday (and I'm jewish), we all shouldn't be having such bad thoughts.

I WOULD HAVE POISONED THE OWNER, he's the one who deserves "Frontier Justice".

          Nuff said, Happy Easter.

I've been on both sides of this fence...........had a neighbour shoot one of my dogs when it was at his place harrassing his new calves and his dogs, and I shot one his when I caught it killing my chickens. Both were after multiple warnings. No hard feelings on either side, we're still good friends. It's a sad fact of farm life. Farm dogs are needed to keep predators at bay, but they don't respect fence lines. They're not at all like city dogs. They serve no useful purpose if they won't stay home, and also no use on a chain. I've also shot a couple of my own that messed with my own livestock, I had one that killed 40 turkeys and 200 chickens in a week. Most will stay on the property and defend it to the death, but every once in a while you get one that will roam or just be an idiot. Very much like people.

I have been on the bad end of that fence...our dogs, which are a black lab and chocolate lab, have had the sheriffs office called on them...but we live in the county which does not have a leash law...other dogs in our area run around but since a new neighbor has moved in I have to keep the puppy (choc lab) on a chain or in the pen...now I don't like to do that...but this neighbor says that he is mean...but never took the time to come over and talk with us and meet the dogs because once you have met they family and been over a few times the dogs are fine around people...the neighbor has talked with Mark and has been nice ever since but now we have to figure out how to purchase a fence and get it up because we don't like having the dog chained up...but I see both sides of the issue...and I agree with most of you that there are bad owners out there and not bad dogs...so I guess what I am saying is that most of use people who own dogs are trying to do something about the dogs when they get complaints on them...just my two cents worth.

If they poisoned dogs by putting poison on their own property, it was totally their right to do so. Good lesson to the guy.

Our neighbors have a German shepherd that wandered onto our property several times after we they moved in. We did not talk to our neighbors about it, but either other neighbors did, or this was on their own accord, but the dog is now on a chain.

I agree, the dog's owner is the one who should be punished. However, around here people tend to find their own solutions to the immediate problem, which in this case was dogs harrassing and killing livestock. I do not condone it - I would have taken the dogs to the pound as strays.

It is possible to keep dogs home - my mom has 2 Border Collies and 2 big white guard dogs - a european breed - and they all stay home.

Melissa, in regards to a fence, PM or email me about invisible fence. I am in the process of training my dogs and it is working fairly well.

                      David,

On your invisible fence - I hope they are better than they were about 8 years ago. We had one in which the collar went beserk in electrical storms - AM band. And it played havoc on one dog. We took that off and threw that $200.00 away.

Corrected - LOML said it cost only $200.

Never thought of it that way... but you're right...

I think in this case, something more humane would have been a better choice... like poison the owners!

                          poison the owner

yeah, poor dogs. I understand they were the offending objects, but it was the owner who was not doing what should have been done. The dogs were just doing what comes natural. Well, like the first response, I wouldn't sweat it.

My "pet" peeve is the cat owners who let their animals roam all over the neighborhood. I get the cat feces in my garden, and keep finding dead birds or pieces thereof. The owners all give the same story, "Cats just naturally roam, what can I do?" I don't want to poison the cats, but don't want to sit around day after day waiting for them to stop by for negative conditioning like BBs or sudden explosive noises. What's a guy to do?

For the cats a Havaheart live trap(with a little canned cat food on the trigger plate) and the local pound will work. After a while the owners will get tired of ransoming their cats and keep them under control, or get rid of them.
