    Morning excitement

About 7 am this morning I heard my wife shriek, and when I went out into the kitchen I discovered her standing in about two inches of water on the kitchen floor. Seems that during the night the icemaker in the freezer decided to give up the ghost and stuck in the "on" position. She opened the freezer and about 5 gallons of water gushed out, carrying along no-longer-frozen peas and the like.

We called the insurance guy right away, and two hours later he called us back. He called a company to come dry us out, took the basic info, and is sending us the loss forms for all our dead stuff.

Right now it's 1:40 in the afternoon and the Dry Up The House guys have just left, leaving four big fans, a huge dehumidifier, some pulled-up carpet, and some antimildew stuff behind. They'll be back on Monday to see how dry everything is.

The water ran into the basement, onto my desk, and my backup hard drive, and the satellite reciever, and some other assorted electronics, and my beloved iPod. Also damaged were about 10 boxes of books and lesson materials, and my drafting table and arm. Also soaked were all of my fishing rods, tackle boxes, and other fishing stuff.

Fortunately, none of the tools were damaged.

Just another day here in Paradise....

Well, yeah, I need new tools, but I have to come up with a different excuse.

        Update:

Because the Dry-The-House guys got here so fast, the water damage to the walls and baseboards is minimal. The kitchen floor may need replacing, but the LR carpet is fine.

The satellite reciever came back online yesterday afternoon, and none of the computers appear damaged. I did have a relatively new hard drive (off, thank goodness) sitting in about two inches of water on top of a desk. I haven't tried it yet-I'm going to let it dry out another day before I try.

The desk top will have to be refinished. I'll have to make a new top for the drafting table, and replace the drafting arm (those babies ain't cheap!). Oh, and my sketchpad is a total loss.

All in all, not too big a disaster, more of a pain in the butt. LOML is already shopping for a new 'frig. She doesn't trust the old one, even with the water to it turned off.

Just got back from the Cardinal game, but that's a whole 'nuther post....

Another example of why our next fridge won't have an icemaker.

          Glad the damage wasn't worse.

My current fridge does not have icemaker because is wastes a lot of perfectly good space. We did not even think of malfunction as another (and might be even better) reason not to have an icemaker. The good part - I only need one reason not to buy a fridge with icemaker, more than one reason is a luxury.

I find it a defeatist logic. It is like tearing up a piece of exotic lumber with a poor quality router bit and deciding that you'll just throw out your router and never own another one.

Icemaker is a great thing to have, especially once hot seasons roll in. Just make some research, and get a reputable brand fridge that does not suffer from icemaker leaks.

I bought a new refrigerator 3 1/2 years ago. Since it was my first new appliance I decided to spend a bit extra and get a large capacity (22 cu. ft.)top freezer with automatic icemaker in the freezer and chilled water inside the refrigerator. It's a GE and also as it happened it is a energystar model.

It hasn't had any problems at all and I wouldn't be without the ice and chilled water ever again.

I think that models with ice and water in the door may be more problematic. After all you must bring water and electricty into the door and after opening and closing a few thousand times there must be a higher chance of failure.

Yeah, looks like I have 14 damaged rods and reels, one cheesy rod rack that's swelling, and four soft tackle bags that I'm sure will smell fishy as soon as I open them (I'm going to have to open/inspect/clean/lubricate all the reels, but it's time to do that anyway.)

As for the fridge, it's 14 years old and this is the first time anything like this has ever happened. According to the insurance guy, I need to have the repair guy make a detailed report, and I might not even have to pay my deductible. I have to stay home from work tomorrow and wait for the guy. What a shame!

I haven't dared turn on my beloved iPod or hard drive yet. The thing that bums me out the most is the ruined drafting arm. Fortunately I don't need it again until July. Right now I'm shopping for a lefty model.
