Last fall when Wal-Mart was dumping their garden center stuff, I picked up 10 sacks of 50 daffodil bulbs for 4 bucks a bag. The plan was to line my 60-foot front porch. But installing them was quite a challenge. I destroyed 5 inexpensive bulb planters punching holes in my clay soil before I found a planter that held up to the challenge. Still, punching hundreds of holes took me days, and about half a large bottle of ibuprofen to recover from it.
But now that it's the following April, it all pays off. There's a 60-foot long row of daffodils along my front porch, broken to give people a spot to step into the yard in front of the front door.
This is about 350 of the bulbs. They're in three staggered rows. I have another almost 100 along the sidewalk that would appear just left of the left edge of the shot right above. They weren't fully up at the time this pic was taken. That's because I had deeper holes for them thanks to the nicer planter.
If you want to try this, I have the following advice:
+ spend the money on a good planter, not a sheet-metal one with bolts, but one where the welds look sturdy. Long handle is a must.
+ try hard to get all the holes the same depth
+ go as deep as you can, you'll get more seasons out of the bulbs if they're deeper
+ if you've got clay, amend it first with compost to get easier beds to work
