    to introduce myself

Hi everyone: I've been lurking around here for a few months so I thought it time to introduce myself. I haven't done this before now because I feel like a kind of a poseur when it comes to woodworking. I came to woodworking in an unusual way. For most of my life I spent my free time in sports, either playing raquetball or swimming and I planned to do these activities till I was too old. Aside from some home repair stuff on the weekends I had no interest in woodworking. But, the higher power had other plans and after catching a virus I was left barely able to walk, let alone play sports. I spent a long time in the hospital and rehab and after I got out I was quite depressed and angry. When I finally went into my garage and started making sawdust it was more as a way to stay sane than any great desire to learn woodworking. But, as most of you know, one can also get infected with the woodworking bug, and that's what happened to me. I started buying tools and trying to learn some of the techniques. Now, I spend as much of my day as possible in my shop.

So, this is a too long and too dramatic introduction, but I wanted tell you who I am and be straight about why I'm here. This is by far the best forum I've found on the Internet. I've enjoyed reading all your posts and despite my ten thumbs I think my woodworking has improved since I became a member of this forum.

As for the basics.... I'm 57 and married with two kids and seven grandkids. I'm a Navy vet and my career was in computers and newspapers. I've also done work in robotics. I've been woodworking for about five years.

Anyway, thanks to all of you for all the information and I look forward to reading more.

OK, Steve, a couple of problems come up. From your post:
"...I was quite depressed and angry." This is going to happen again in this hobby, but it's mandatory. We won't hold that against you - LOL!
"When I finally went into my garage and started making sawdust it was more as a way to stay sane..." Ain't gonna happen. There are several attendant addictions with this 'hobby', nolt the least of which is an obsession with another tool. Seriously though, many of us have been through the physical and emotional mill too. You're in good hands here and very welcome. I haven't seen anybody flamed since I've been here and, actually, quite the opposite. THis bunch pulls you up because we share more commonalities than just wood. Dig in and have a blast. BTW, *welcome aboard*!!!
              Blessings,
              Chiz
