Not sure if this is the place....but need...

a bit of assistance. A friend of mine is looking to have a custom wall to wall unit made. Now this is above my pay grade so to speak & the real issue is where to find someone to build such a unit? Check the yellow pages & you don't really find anyone. I told him to try woodnet & craigs list???

Anyone know of anywhere to find such info? (this is in Northern Virginia if that helps)

Depends on what he is after, and what is his budget.
    Some ideas:
    1. If he had some work done on his house by a contractor, he might ask for references. If house is recently bought, his real estate agent might have some contacts.
    2. Inquire at local furniture/cabinet stores that do custom work - they might refer him. Even HD/Lowe's might be of some help.
    3. Check with neighbors to see if anyone had some sort of such work done recently.
    4. Some guides recommend checking out the contractor you plan to hire at local building supply. Local lumberyards might have pointers on carpenters/cabinetmakers.

Most of the above (as well as consulting yellow pages) will most likely yield a professional who will likely do quality work, but will charge a hefty price. If your friend is on a tight budget and wants to risk finding a 'handyman' type, he might check classifieds in local papers and on sites like craigslist.

Excellent - I'll pass along the info. I gather from coversations that he wants "nice" but I'm not sure what that translates into dollar wise.

In NOVA he may be waiting awhile before someone becomes available. Lots and lots of houses being built in the area. That and prices around here are crazy now.

Have him give www.viennahardwood.com a call. they may know of someone.

If at first you don't succeed, deny you were trying in the first place.

Yep - lol - there's not many/if any stand alone cabinet shops in the area. The ones that are here are pretty much "contracted out" to the home builders. There is a dearth of "retail" builders, it's almost all trade level (i.e. you'd have to go through a contractor).

Remember - this is an area where you quite often see signs for new townhouse "from the low 900's". It's truly insane.

See if there is a local woodworkers club. My club often gets requests for someone to do this kind of work.
