    now 'chester' has passed away

    hi,

just heard that dennis weaver passed away. his role as 'chester' on gunsmoke was always one of my favourites. loved gunsmoke - they don't make t.v. shows like that anymore, do they? also liked dennis weaver in all his other roles including the detective in n.y. from arizona.

Yes, it seems like it was a bad week for sidekicks. Chester and McCloud were great characters, and I used to watch whenever I could. Dennis Weaver was born in Joplin, Mo. which is about 35 miles from me. If you ever fly in or our of Joplin, you will leave the airport on Dennis Weaver Drive.

James Arness, be careful, you are the last major Gunsmoke character left.

actually, festus was played by ken curtis who passed away in april, 1991. festus(ken curtis) took over as the deputy sherrif in dodge when dennis weaver(chester) left the show.

still, you're right about 2 deputies passing away on the same weekend - don knotts and dennis weaver - very sad indeed .
