    Vonage Update

Something happened to my original Vonage thread so using new thread to post follow up.

Initially I was having trouble with Sprint not wanting to maintain my basic service if I subscribed to Vonage. One of the BT3 responders suggested the PUC
(which I could not think of). I did contact the PUC and the next day they called me back and said there should be no problem.

I again called Sprint (Ididn't mention the PUC) and they were very nice and cooperative and more than happy to help me in any way.

not a shot at you or anything, but since Vonage seems to be a topic of conversation every so often here on BT3, I figured I should warn about Vonage again - it's in the news again -

IIRC from your original thread, you wanted to have both local service using your land line and Vonage for long distance, so this doesn't really apply to you.

I have Vonage on one line, and I did keep a regular land line as well, although at this point power outages is a primary reason.

But, it should be noted that Vonage is really not to blame for something like this. The problem is that the local phone companies and the localities will not give Vonage the access to the regular 911 call centers that the standard local carries have. So while everyone blames the VoIP providers, equal blame should go to the baby bells for blocking access.

A UPC, battery backup, handles the power outage issue. I have my router, access point and modem plugged into it. It is good for hours. Then we also have cell phones.

I am in my second month with Vonage and I am very happy with it With my land line at the basic rate (for alarm system and 911) I am still running at half the cost before I switched and we do not even use all of our alloted minutes at the lower rate.

I have Vonage for over 16 months and right now I am paying $15.00 / month for the next 10 months for the service that normally cost $24.99.. I got an offer 2 months ago from a company called sun rocket and called vonage to cancel my account and the csr told me that since i've been with them for quite some time they will be do everything they can to keep my business.. He credited my last two months bill and giving me $10 off for the next 12 months. I am happy with vonage and power outage is no concern.. i use my cell phone as a back up if the power does go out. I just wish they offer softphones for more countries in SE Asia so that it is cheaper to call relatives in SE Asia. So right now me and my relatives are getting by using skype which is another wonderful product. Before Vonage I was paying over $30.00 for our lan line with caller id as the only feature. That does not count the long distance carrier as well.. A friend told me about vonage and since i have comcast broadband it should not be a problem.. He gave me a link and we both got a 2 months free service so economically Vonage is the cheaper phone solution for me.
