Upgrading Rockler Excelsior lathe to Electronic Variable Speed

I've been wanting to convert my Excelsior 10x18 lathe, which I primarily use for pens, to EVS for a while, finally decided to pull the trigger on the conversion kit from PSI, having heard that it is a direct fit. Here's my project video of the upgrade. Thanks for watching!

Looks like you blocked off air flow to the heat sink fins. The plastic cover gives some room for air to move around the fins. but with the fins close to the table there is less room for the air to move over those fins. The air is trapped.
As a EE, I know air cooling can be very important to power electronics lifespan.

If your only tool is a hammer, you tend to treat all problems as if they were nails.

Great video, Bill. I've been wanting one of those for my lathe and your video answered a lot of questions. Not only would it add VS, but I could move the switch to a spot that makes much more sense to me.

That looks exactly like the unit that I added back in 2008 onto my Rikon.

Loring, I think the airflow should be better without the cover - the openings in that plastic were very small and restrictive, and now with the cover off (there is a good inch under the heat sink) there should be no airflow restriction .

OK, couldn't see the 1" clearance. I thought it was flush to the table top

Thanks Joey. I like the lefthanded switch position better too.

I converted my lathe to the same unit over 3 years ago and have never had a problem.
