    Useful Info on Penetrating Oils

    From: Antique Automobile Club blog:

    Penetrating Oils

Machinist's Workshop Mag recently published some information on various
penetrating oils that I found very interesting. Some of you might appreciate
this. The magazine reports they tested penetrates for break out torque on
    rusted nuts.

They are below, as forwarded by an ex-student and professional machinist. They
arranged a subjective test of all the popular penetrates with the control being
the torque required to remove the nut from a "scientifically rusted"
    environment.

    Penetrating oil Average load

    None
    516 pounds

    WD-40
    238 pounds

    PB Blaster 214
    pounds

    Liquid Wrench 127 pounds

    Kano Kroil
    106 pounds

    ATF-Acetone mix 53 pounds

The ATF-Acetone mix was a "home brew" mix of 50 - 50 automatic
transmission fluid and acetone. Note the "home brew" was better than
any commercial product in this one particular test.

Our local machinist group mixed up a batch and we all now use it with equally
    good results.

Note also that "Liquid Wrench" is almost as good as "Kroil"
for about 20% of the price.

Steve from Godwin-Singer says that ATF-Acetone mix is the best and you can also
use ATF- lacquer thinner 50 - 50 mix.

Did they also measure the amount of time it took the penetrating oil to penetrate?

Update RE: Power Steering Fluid (last paragraph)

It looks like the original article was in the April/May 2007 issue of Machinists Workshop.

        Quote:
Machinist's Workshop magazine actually tested penetrants for break out torque on rusted nuts. Significant results! They are below, as forwarded by an ex-student and professional machinist, Bud Baker.
Don't forget the April 2007 "Machinist's Workshop" magazine comparison
        test.

*They arranged a subjective test of all the popular penetrants with
the control being the torque required to remove the nut from a
        "scientifically rusted" environment.

        *Penetrating oil ..... Average load*

        None ..................... 516 pounds
        WD-40 .................. 238 pounds
        PB Blaster ............. 214 pounds
        Liquid Wrench ..... 127 pounds
        Kano Kroil ............ 106 pounds
        ATF-Acetone mix....53 pounds

*The ATF-Acetone mix was a "home brew" mix of 50 - 50 automatic transmission
        fluid and acetone.*
*Note the "home brew" was better than any commercial product in this one
particular test. Our local machinist group mixed up a batch and we all now
use it with equally good results. Note also that "Liquid Wrench" is about
as good as "Kroil" for about 20% of the price.

The results have been widely quoted on the internet, but the picture in the magazine allegedly shows power steering fluid and not ATF, and according to lbender (who claims to be the author) in this thread, it actually was power steering fluid (mixed with acetone) that they tested with.

The same report was quoted and there was a lengthy discussion thread on this topic last October
This forum is for any topic that you would normally talk about at the office "around the coffee pot". Jokes, tall tales, and true stories are welcome as long as they are clean and in good taste. I only ask that you steer away from topics on religion or politics. Go ahead and pull up a chair and pour yourself a cup of coffee and enjoy the conversation.

I've been using ATF and acetone for many years and up till I got got wd for fishing, he let me off though if I made him that promise no to use it anymore. Some of my lures may get a little on them while I'm spraying my reels (or my hands).

                    What a Fish story!

                    From WD-40's own site:

                    What a Fish story!

                    Myth: WD-40 contains fish oil.
                    Fact:
Consumers have told us over the years that they have caught some of the biggest fish ever after protecting their fish hooks and lures with WD-40. We believe this legend came from folks assuming that the product must contain fish oil since it appears to attract fish. Sorry Charlie®, it just ain’t so.

WD-40 Company has taken steps to respect and conserve the environment, and encourages its users to do the same. While WD-40 can be used to help protect fishing equipment from rust and corrosion, WD-40 Company does not recommend using WD-40 to attract fish.

I also remember Liquid Wrench as a kid, along with other standby's (not penetrating oils), like Neatsfoot Oil, 3 in One Oil, and Brasso.

In a box of my dad's stuff after he died, I found a can of 3-in-1 oil he used to clean his guns. I still use the same can for the same thing.
