See, I should have posted *before* I hung them. That sounds like a lot easier than what I did -- which was basically a couple of L brackets, but practically impossible to do without help. They're really light, so there's only two screws holding each one up at this point.
I ended up attaching the brackets to the wall first, then getting help to hold up the other end while I drove the screw into the cornice. I was only 1/4" plywood, so it was helpful to brace it along its length with a hardwood cutoff and a couple of spring clamps.
Here are a couple of pictures. It looks pretty ugly from the back, but it's all covered by by the curtains so you'd have to be really nosy to notice the ugliness.



Now the idea is in the front of her brain housing group again! She want them all wood to match the colonial trim and not only wants the tops to be shelves, but wants them to protect the contents from dust. (Think shadow boxes.)
