    my latest project

well i worked in the shop alittle today and made me some new lathe chisels

i had bought a 25" Long 1/4" drill bit from somewhere well i ended up breaking the first 4" off in a turning while drilling a starter hole to hollow out a vase for the wife

so i saved the longer pc and made 2 new chisels for hollowing out of it
both work ok i think they turned out really good for my first chisels diy style
the top chisel has an 16" ash handle and the other has a 18"L honey locust handle
for the collars i used 3/4" copper pipe its all i had on hand

the other 2 chisels are a 3/4" roughing gouge and the 3/8" bowl gouge that i got with my PSI lathe
the 3/4" roughing gouge came with a short 10" ash handle and just wasnt enough at times, just felt short to me so i turned a 18"L honey locust handle for it total length now is 25"
i used to think it was crazy to use such long chisels for turning but then i got the 3/8" bowl gouge and just loved its length also i like the weight of the honey locust over the ash handles i've made even though the ash was easier to turn .

so what do ya'll think of my handles

Very nice. I like it when you can do a project for doing projects!

Those look really nice - I have a couple of spare slots in my gouge rack I just built - don't suppose you'd want to just ship them to me for safekeeping?

How did you make the gouge profiles? Standard bench grinder or a slow speed? Any issues with heat as you were shaping them?

        Again, pretty work!

          Pretty cool, Blame.

FYI - if you want an "old-world" look for those copper ferules, you can daub them with oil and apply flame. I used peanut oil from the kitchen on a similar project.

Cool, I need to try making some new longer handles for a few of mine. Hope they turn out half as nice as yours did. Pat

                hey scott

well i didnt make the gouge blank i used a windsor i got off of ebay acouple of days ago
seems to be a pretty good pc of steel

i used my disc/belt sander to grind the hollowing chisels but i kept a can of water near by and every little bit i would dip it in the water to keep it cool for the final shaping i used a ******* file then a diamond file to sharpen them while i was using the ******* file to shape i could tell some of the steal was harder then other spots but that was in where i heated the pcs to bend it

thanks for all the replies guys
