Rod Kirby - houston visit - Report

L-R Don (Houston), Pappy, Jim Boyd, Rod Kirby, Loring, at Rockler

Rockler posted greetings for Rod (or at least for Ron)

Pappy made these mementos of Texas for Rod to display our picture
    (plaque says BT3Central Houston 2004)

Checking out a Rali Plane at Woodcraft

Some Seafood at Joe's Crab Shack

My very own (Serial no 2?) Kirby micro-positioner on my (dusty) BT3.

    Not shown:
BBQ at Luther's, Coffee at Denny's
Visit to Harbor Freight where Rod wanted, of all things, acid brushes (9 dozen for $6 - apprently $175 in Oz)
Visit to the BORG - HD

I think a good time was had by all.

You can see a closeup of Pappy's frame I posted in finished projects.

As for the HD visit, Rod wanted to see his first BT3100 in the flesh:
The rip fence handle was missing. The miter fence knob and support and bolt were missing, the black miter fence pivot was found in the center slot of the SMT. Rod thought the plastic yellow elevation crank looked silly.

We all dropped a few bucks along the way (how can you visit 4 woodworking stores and tool stores without doing so?). And Rockler manager Max Q gave Rod a nice blue golf shirt with Rockler's name and logo on the chest to take home.

I definately had a good time! Good people, good food and woodworking. What more could you ask for? One thing that kinda sticks out in my mind is what happened at "Joe's Crab Shack" eatery. Rod had a coughing fit when we were greeted by a cute blond hostess with the words "Bite Me" on the front of her t-shirt. Good thing it is not crawdad season[}][}][}] Can't wait for the woodworking show to meet up again.

Looks like I missied out on a great time. Yesterday about 8:00am I thought I had it all worked out to slide on over there. I even had an excuse to go while working to pick up some evidence over in Katy. Alas it was not to be. I had actually planned to ambush you all at Rockler or somewhere. Would have been funny.

Glad to see you all had a good time.

Shame you couldn't work it out, Jeff. You missed out on a day or great friendship and good food! I didn't take many pictures, but I'll look thru them and see if there are any that don't duplicate Loring's.

I would have liked to have met Carol, but she was off and running before we picked up Rod.

Great pics. Definately an event to remember. I, like many, wish to have been able to make the meet. Glad to see that everyone was having a good time. Glad ya'll shared some of that Texas hospitality with Rod. I have heard and know from experience that they grow things bigger and Texas and I can picture Rod's reaction to the Hostess perfectly.

Did Rod ever get to enjoy a TEXAS style BBQ while he was there ????

Looks like you all had fun.

Well, we came from all over to meet Rod so we had a store-bought BBQ Lunch from Luther's which is pretty good and then we had a Gulf-of Mexico seafood dinner at Joe's. At least we did not take him to Outback. Crimey!

                            What they all said.

I had the time of my life - I have no "serious WW" friends in Oz, so it was very special to meet the guys. Just wish I was close - to do it more often
