Nice haul Ray, the grain lines in the fork of every species I have tried is not to be belived. The changing grain direction can present challenges and re-design opportunities however. Really nice to a ready source for that kind of stock - did or does the lad deliver - the wood?

Sounds like your daughter's fiancee knows what his future FIL likes! Nice pieces!

Don't I, though? In spite of the tempting offers, I'll pass, thanks! I'm looking forward to seeing if I can get something interesting out of that forked piece too.

Hey, I got some frequent flyer miles. Can you meet me at Heathrow and bring a chunk of that burl with you?

I'll buy you a tea, or a pint depending on my arrival time.

Nice haul, Ray. Let me know how much the shipping will be to get that burl delivered to South Carolina, I want it...
Speaking of burls, some may not know, but root balls of trees have the same beautiful colors and twisted grain that burls have. And best of all, there's a root ball on every tree!!.
I grabbed several cherry root balls this past summer from a land clearing project and recently pulled one out of the drying bag and cut it into sections. Beautiful wood!.

Man I love that burl! Nice haul on the wood for sure. I need to start looking around for some wood and contact some tree services and such. We just don’t have very many trees species in this area that I would want to turn.

    Big win - Small gloat!

We visited my daughter over the weekend (in leiu of a Christmas visit). She loved the table lamp, which was a good result. Another good result was that her fiancee (who is an arboriculturist and British Open Tree Climbing Champion) had been saving me some stock from a variety of felling. Here's what I brought home with me:

There's oak, holly, maple, a large chestnut burr and some walnut too. I'm looking forward to putting the bandsaw into action, but I'll take my time to see how to get the most out of this stock. There's much more in the offing too, as he's just been awarded a good contract for maintenance on a large estate with a huge variety of trees in various states of health.
