The wood was over 30% moisture content. The "drive plate" fit in the recess immediately after turning, 24 hours later the recess was too small. Same with the 1-1/16 hole in the body. The spring retainer in the base fit immediately after turning not 24 hours later. Mounting after turning eliminates the fiddling to get these parts to fit again. The fiddling is why I recommend kiln dried stock. Of course I won't follow my own recommendation otherwise how will I get to use all of that 12" diameter apple wood I scrounged up yesterday.
Ah, that makes sense. Thanks much, Mort!

Looks like you had a heck of a time with this one. A peppermill is one of the things LOML would like too, so I really appreciated your write-up and the references! But I do not understand the reason for this one:

"Mount the grinding mechanisms immediately after turning."

What is the reason for that?

    started a topic Peppermill

    Peppermill

In the interests of saving Sam's file space. I have put my experience in a pdf file. I will be happy to answer any questions although it maybe a while I have been allowed two days for wood scrounging then "we" are packing and will break out our snowbird wings before we need the de-icers. Back to the land of Lowes, Rockler, Harbor Freight and Woodcraft none of these are in Maine. The nearest BORG is 2.5 hours one way.
