How to use Veritas Large Saddle square

I got this saddle square, had the smaller one and always found it useful.
I was wondering what the center slot is for... the smaller saddle square does not have one. Anyone have an idea how its used?

Another question would be whats' the hole for at the corner that goes across the short distance of the square?

"This version has a slot machined through the center to help lay out stud locations. Simply mark the centers of your studs on top and bottom plate, then place the square so that the slot is on the center mark.

Mark both sides of the saddle square to give accurate and square stud locations; the large saddle square is 1-1/2" wide so the marks will fit nominal 2" lumber."

Upon further reflection, it's probably to mark the center opposite of an intersecting stud to nail into the end of the stud.

Sheesh, here it is: "and has a center slot to locate the centers of studs in wall layout."

One of the features (from their site) is that you can draw a connecting wrap line up the face and onto the edge. A similar one could be made from plexi for a lot less money. The hole is likely to hang the little one.

I use the hole on mine to hang on a pegboard bracket, both the big and the small squares.

sorry Loring, didn't catch that at first. My guess on that is to loop a string, can attach it to a carabiner and put on your tool belt.
