Now that my Grandsons are all too old, I decided to make a toy car

Here's a sneak peek at the car.
I have some pegs for the wheels but they fit very tightly so I just put them on loose dowels to see how everything looks.

If your only tool is a hammer, you tend to treat all problems as if they were nails.

Actually the Grandsons are all 10, 6 and 5 years old. But the Granddaughter is 1 and another granddaughter due in December. I guess they can play with cars just as well as the boys.

Finished. Had to make some washers to space the wheel away form the wheel well, I thought there would be too much friction and I thought the wheel looked a little better a bit more proud of the fender well.
Sprayed it with a few coats of acrylic, hammered the pegs in. (.217 in a .214 hole, not going to fall out).

Pegs and wheels from Amazon. That would be a lot of work.

Not entirely satisfied with how smooth the finish is. It hard to sand curved surfaces with a sanding block. Especially the front and back being end grain.
Any suggestions - detail sander perhaps?

Only have 46 wheels and 96 pegs left, what next?

Looks Nice! Now YOU have a toy to play with!

          I really like your stamp!

The bad thing to me about the stamp is that it takes 15 minutes to heat up and then 10 seconds to do the stamping - its fairly unforgiving in technique and then it takes another 15 minutes to cool off enough to put away. Takes a long time although you can use the time to clean up your shop, haha.
I have a small mechanical kitchen timer I bought off eBay that I keep in the box to time it.so I don't forget when doing other stuff.
I've learned, when I remember, to stamp things early in the process so if I screw up branding I can replace the piece part (as opposed to waiting until its done and can't be disassembled).

Its very gratifying (to me at least) that it rolls very smoothly and easily and in a perfectly straight line.

My dad made cars for me that were very similar to that, but not nearly as fancy. No wheel wells, the wheels were loosely screwed on the surface of the sides of the car, and the wheels themselves were discs cut with a hole saw. I watched him make them and at the time thought he was practically magic.

Very nice and fun work too. The only car I ever made was when my son was in Cub Scouts, way back in the late 70's . (I recall posting that a few years ago.) That was fun and the "roll" was good enough to compete in the 'Pinewood Derby" of the time.

Just a week or so ago, I received the latest Lee-Valley Woodworking Christmas Catalog and on pages 12 & 13 there was a pictorial on making a 'Wooden Toy Car" which also provided a link to a video. Here is a link to that particular catalog: https://www.leevalley.com/OnlineCata...px?id=15a83a67

              Thanks for the post,

Yeah CW, I built about 8 cub scout derby cars for my kids and my grandkids they are a challenge too along similar lines. I've posted several times here with the cub scout projects. Useful experience for this. But the wheels are the big difference. Derby cars you have to use the crappy plastic wheels and crappy oblong nails they provide.

You know - this is something I have started doing - keeping different things together as a "set" - rather than in different places. . . . For instance, I used to keep all of my router bits in an organized set of router drawers, but now I keep finger jig bits and dove tail jig bits in with the jigs so that I can quickly identify the right bits for that jig. Makes life simple. There are other things that I do like that now rather than everything in its own place.

It's little tips like this that make building things go so much better!
                  Thanks for sharing these tips!

Grandpa made a toy for her. Was there any doubt?

Had a bit of a hard life for a year...

Aside from the paint damage both the thin corners at the back wheel wells broken when dropped... apparently many times.
