what kind of wood is this?

Got this hardwood many years ago as part of a Lumber Liquidators pack. I split with some other guys.

Have quite a few boards of this, has some rusty discolored nail holes (six per plank), looks like it was part of a pallet. 6 foot long 6.5" wide planks almost 1" thick though.
Some parts had some heartwood that looked dark brownish-red.
Fairly hard, dense and brittle. machines pretty nicely.
2-1/2 inch wide samples below. this is the ripped 2-1/2"edge on my BT3000

Looks like African mahogany to me. Yours doesn't have as much interlocking grain as what I've dealt with. When my planer hits those patches, you get some tearout regardless of what direction you feed it.

I had - and have used up - African Mahogany that looked very similar to this, but it had a darker natural color, more of the brown in it. Maybe this is the sapwood of it?

Philippine Mahogany looks very similar too, and so does some luan.

The grain texture in the first photo looks like red oak, 2nd photo with sapwood also looks like red oak.

It looks a lot like some chestnut I worked with a while back. I think the color matches better than red oak or mahogany and it has a tighter open grain.

I looked up chestnut in the wood database here and it also looks very similar.

              I measured the density...

              14.5 x 2-3/8 x 3/4" piece weighed .794 pounds
which works out to 53lb/cu ft.
Pretty dense... African Mahogany sheet says 40 lbs/cu ft. typical.

Having measured the density as 53 lb/cu ft, I used the wood data base Twistsol linked. and filtered for a hardwood density 49-60 lb/cu ft and light colored and it came up with a handful, I narrowed them down to
Kempas, density 55 lb/cu ft, a relatively inexpensive Malaysian/Indonesian wood often used for flooring and for pallets.... which just about fits the Lumber liquidator profile.
The grain and endgrain pictures look very similar, although my wood seems to have a more pronounced heartwood.

Flooring and pallets….. sounds like they have found a use for the cast offs!
