    Building a mantel

Starting a project with my friend. He just got done hanging the ship lap on his wall and we are going to build the mantel under his mounted tv. His old mantel was to tall and did not work where he wanted the mount .
The idea is to build a faux mantel essentially a mitered box with capped ends. If you see the picture it will go over be front of the bricks. So it will be L shaped. His sound bar will be under the t.v. With a half inch clearance. We also have wires to hide behind the back right section. Attached are the sketch and before pic

I did something similar for a friend recently. His house had a "mantel" that was just a wallboard outcropping. We removed the wallboard, and covered the studs under it with a box made of Wenge.

Very nice. Did you glue and nail? Could picket screws be used from the back?

Thanks. I used two dark brass screws on each side near the back. Take a close look at the second photo near the wall. I gave him a few options, including pocket screws from underneath, and he liked the brass.

Got the wood milled and the miters cut. Now I need to cut miters on the long ends. Don’t have a good miter saw right now so will be using the gauge on my table saw.

Very nice. Great match on the wood color to the brick color.
