    Garden Bench out of Hickory

I've been commissioned to build a garden bench out of hickory.

Patron isn't picky about design, size, etc ---- Only said "Bench" and "hickory."

So - I have 20 BF of hickory on the way to me (all 4/4 s2s).

I have 2 possible designs from woodcraft - linking the top candidate, here.
    (source is woodcraft)

    I have 2 questions:

    a) did I get enough wood?????? (shooting for 45" wide).
(I ordered in a hurry from Hall Lumber - trying to beat the storm)

    b) Any recommendations working with Hickory? I hear it can get tough.

My gut says you won't have enough lumber for the bench. I'd estimate you're going to need about 50bd ft to account for wastage, etc.

20 bf won't be enough, at least according to your photo and the stated width.
If the patron stated only "bench", how do you know what type of bench? And whether it is for indoor use or outdoor use. A basic bench could be as simple as "feet and a seat". Or it could be "feat, seat, and a back". Or it could also include arms, like your photo.

Sharpened all my tools, and bought a new blade for the Table Saw (Hickory is brittle - and can crack ---- especially with dull blades)

My local Woodcraft happened to have some Hickory on sale @ $4.00 /BF. I picked up another 20 BF. Praying color and grain is comparable to what's on the truck.

I found some reasonable plans in an old Popular Science book on my shelves.

I'm going to build a garden bench ---- 45" wide, 18" high --- with a 36" back. Working on cut list ---- and praying.

Am sure the seasoned pros are shaking their heads.

Be sure to post a picture of the finished product! I'm interested. LOML has mentioned me making one; I told her maybe next century!
