If I understand correctly, a white fungus on the outside does not mean spalting.
Spalting is the black lines following the grain that occurs most famously from the ambrosia beetle. There are some other means of spalting that includes some fungus, but just a fungus on the outside does not mean the wood is spalted.
I think you actually have to saw the wood into planks to see if its spalted.
